NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Carleton College 2012-13 men’s tennis team was named an ITA All-Academic Team for the second straight year, making this the 10th time since 2002 that the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) cited the Knights for academic excellence. Additionally, a team-record nine players picked up individual recognition.

These honors recognizes outstanding academic achievement during the 2012-13 season. The team award is given to ITA programs with a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. The Knights are one of only 41 NCAA Division III men’s tennis programs named a 2013 ITA-Academic Team.

Additionally, a total of 34 MIAC male student-athletes chosen as ITA Scholar-Athletes. To be recognized as an individual award winner, players must be letter winners and have a grade point average of at least 3.50. Carleton’s nine-player contribution to that group represented a 50 percent increase over the program’s previous best of a half-dozen selections in 2003 and 2004.

This year’s recipients include Alex Chin ’13 (Hingham, Mass./Hingham), Paul Cooper ’13 (Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central), and Austin Jiang ’13 (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port). The trio of recent graduates was joined by Mauricio Gonzalez ’15 (La Paz, Bolivia/American Cooperative School), Ben Huang ’15 (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline), Andrew Hwang ’15 (Brookfield, Wis./University School), Avery Rux ’15 (Austin, Texas/Home School), Philip Xiao ’15 (Chino Hills, Calif./Troy), and Richard Yeker ’16 (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson)

Since the ITA’s All-Academic Team program began in 2002, the Knights have received the team award 10 times compared to 14 combined times by the other nine MIAC men’s programs over that same time period. Joining the Knights on this year’s list are Gustavus Adolphus College, Hamline University, and St. Olaf College.
