Why did you choose to become a history major?

A professor asked me a variation of this question my freshman year, long before I had declared my major. I responded that history is actually a part of every study. English majors analyze the literature of different historical periods, physics majors learn about how the universe and our world were formed, geology majors study how the earth beneath our feet has evolved throughout history, and anthropology majors do the same for humans. History affects every aspect of our lives and I did not want to be ignorant about the lessons it can teach us. Plus, it’s pretty funny sometimes too. After this response, my professor told me I was stuck - I had to be a history major now. She was right.

What historical period would you visit?

I have always been a bit obsessed with ancient Rome. I realize that I would be risking experiencing brutal violence, a world without antibiotics, and living under an Emperor, but something about the ruins has always enticed me. Plus the excitement of living in an era of expansion would make a visit very worthwhile.

Who is your historical crush?

Thomas Cromwell.* This guy was your average English lawyer in the 17th century until he climbed his way through the ranks using intelligence and wit, eventually effectively running the government for Henry VIII. If you want to experience the full drama of his story, check out Wolf Hall (see also BBC trailer at: Wolf Hall) and the book sequel Bring Up The Bodies by Hilary Mantel.
*Not to be confused with Oliver Cromwell, who was a distant relation.
