Comps
The senior comprehensive project, or "Comps", is the capstone of every Carleton student's academic life. You'll often hear it used as a verb: "I'm compsing this term." Seniors must complete a comps project in their major in order to graduate. For students going on to graduate school, it provides a good taste of what it's like to write a long-form dissertation. Usually completed in the latter part of senior year.

Bassirou Sarr '09 says:My comps project is on Bayesian and spatial statistics. Our goal is to create a spatio-temporal model to estimate daily ozone levels in Minnesota. -
Keven Tell '09 says:Chemistry has group comps, so the topics are predetermined. I am hoping to get into the group focusing on food chemistry, as that is what I might possibly go to graduate school for. -
Liz Evison '10 says:I'm not a senior yet, so I haven't started my comps project, but by the end of this year I will have started to think about it. The linguistics comps consists of doing a lot of extended research, writing a paper, and giving a presentation. I am considering a research topic related to some part of semantics and pragmatics. -
Julia Busiek '09 says:My comps [senior comprehensive project] topic will probably examine the impact of China's invasion and occupation on the religious, ethnic, and political lives of Tibetans. From here the topic seems dauntingly large and complex, and I'm curious to see where my interests and previous study will take me within it. For my Environmental Studies capstone project I want to look at land management in National Parks. The relationship between conservation, preservation, and fair access to our Parks is really engaging, and I want to think more about ways in which they can all interact, rather than being mutually exclusive aims.
