Class of 2009: Ten Students
Michael Martin
#10 of 10

"Building a supermileage vehicle became a valuable teacher for my life. Beyond new insights into the physics of engine efficiency, I faced complex human dynamics." Think it's impossible for a vehicle to average 1,525 miles per gallon? Well, as captain of the South Spencer High School supermileage team, Michael and his teammates built a vehicle that did just that. His team won the Indiana Supermileage Championship, with a state record performance, and competed against top engineering colleges at the national championship. Fully committed to addressing our planet's environmental issues, he was also captain of South Spencer’s and the state of Indiana's Envirothon teams, while attending regional, state and, finally, the National Canon Envirothons. Always passionate about being a leader, he has been captain of the tennis team, captain of the social studies academic team, senior class president, and president of the local 4-H club. To expand his ability to address environmental issues globally, Michael is interested in majoring in international relations while continuing advanced studies in physics.
