A Photographic Retrospective: Homecoming and Michelle Obama

    October 14, 2008

Here are some shots of the recent highlights of my life: A trip to Macalester to hear Michelle Obama (affectionately known as MObama) speak, and Carleton winning their 5th straight football game (49-41) at Homecoming to become #1 in the MIAC.

    My Life Summarized With Food

    October 14, 2008

One of the strangest parts of college is eating. Today I had lunch with two friends of mine, and we ended up just sitting and talking in the dining hall for an hour. We talked about the NNB (like a paper mini-Craig's List, with a list of events, lost & found, wanted ads, etc), about the future (I feel like I'll end up having that conversation with every other senior at some point during the year), and how shocked we were that all of us suddenly had the chunk from noon to four without any real obligations (except general homework and comps work). It was a really nice...More

    Of "Passing In" and Marionberries

    October 14, 2008

One of the most interesting things about Carleton so far has been getting to know people from all over the country (and outside it). At first I didn't notice any differences between myself and my friends based on where we grew up, but recently there have been a few incidents that took me off guard.

    Money, news, and assumptions

    October 13, 2008

I'll assume that you've immersed yourself in news about the global financial crisis. As news director at KRLX, Carleton's student-run radio station, it's my job to break down this monstrosity of a story into news that gets to the core of the issue.

    The Tunnels

    October 7, 2008

The other night I was leaving Exit 69 rehearsal and I noticed that the Tunnels were open. For those of you who don't know, Carleton had a system of tunnels that connect some buildings to others so you don't have to walk outside in the cold. Unfortunately, they were a bit of a security hazard, so they closed them up and now they use them for storage spaces and for "Haunted Tunnel Walks" on Halloween. However, every once in a while I get lucky...More...

I Use an Awesome 19th Century Telescope

    October 6, 2008

In this post I go to an astronomy club open house in Goodsell Observatory, and am awed by the incredible telescope, which I proceed to use to find Andromeda. ... Oh man, I didn't mean to spoil the end for you just now. No, no, you should still read it. Maybe I don't find Andromeda! Maybe I look at the Ring Nebula instead. Or maybe Goodsell Observatory is locked and I don't get in at all. See, now you don't know what's going to happen, and you can go ahead and read the post now. I won't say anything more until you open it up.

    Moving In

    October 3, 2008

It’s been a few weeks since I started classes, but I simply cannot write about what freshman year at Carleton is like without describing the experience of moving in. So here I go...

    What Happened To September?

    September 30, 2008

Three weeks in and I can already tell senior year is going to be MUCH different than any other year. Suddenly I have to figure out what I'm doing next year and then worry about finishing job applications and fellowship applications, I'm already doing research for my comps project, and of course there's homework. My last September at Carleton is almost over!  More...

    A Time for Renewal

    September 30, 2008

A week or so ago a friend of mine from Santa Fe, NM held a ceremony of renewal which is based on the burning of Zozobra. Zozobra was created in 1924 by Will Shuster, and is also known as “Old Man Gloom” – an appropriate name for something that burns grief and worry along with it. It was really cool – we burned a model of a man, like in the tradition, but made of old clothes, a few sticks, and some gasoline, and then threw in papers where we wrote our worries/concerns/doubts. It is supposed to be a time of renewal and release, which is perfectly timed...
