Finals Are Done!

My mom came up to visit and wrote a few thoughts for me! Other things: Classes are blessedly done (I've been catching up on my sleep and my tv shows), I cut my hair nice and short (so far loving it), I have been working up a storm at the library, and I even managed to turn in both my papers on time. One of my roommates left last night, which is a bit sad, but inevitable. I think I have 19 hours for this pay period when normally I have 15-16, and I had to get subs for 3.5 of my normal hours, too.

Additionally, I am super excited to start my internship at Democracy for America, and sad to see all my senior friends leaving. Hopefully I'll get to see a couple of them over the summer while I'm up here in the Northeast.

Post Soon! I Promise!

Right now it's 3:30 AM and I'm working on a big research paper (it's finally starting to come together, I think). Anyway - don't be too afraid - I didn't manage my time well, so now I'm making up for it. I will post soon about classes ending, my mom visiting, and possibly about the effects of religious identity on ethnic conflict/civil wars or the evolution of the LGBTA movement in France over the past century - just to give you an idea of my research right now.

For now, enjoy the videos my Ethnic Conflict prof played in class yesterday:

2009's winner, the entry from Norway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiH4BFTELME

2006's winner, the Finnish entry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5ZfQMOHB5k&feature=fvw

A Best of Reel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEXyR1KM8v0

Read this blog I wrote!

So, I'm going to link to a college review I wrote about Carleton over at a friend's website, www.admissionsadvice.com. I spent a long time writing the review, so definitely check it out if you're a prospective student! Carolyn Lawrence, the writer of the blog, is a friend of my mother's and a very nice lady - I actually met her and her son when they visited Carleton (although apparently I was not convincing and he went to Reed) - so read her blog if you're trying to make sense of the whole process.

And some more stuff ...

I've Got the Month of May: A Guest Post

My friend Britta had a really great weekend last weekend, and I asked her to write a blog post for me about the stuff she did, knowing I couldn't really reproduce it. She always has a totally unique way of looking at things, so I thought I'd post her thoughts.

I Have A Cool Guest Post Coming ... Soon?

My friend Britta had a pretty eventful weekend - she did the Alternatives to Violence Program and then went to an incredible May Day celebration with some lovely pics taken. I'm going to hope she writes something up for me this week, and instead give you guys a small taste of two things I'm really into right now: my music (shocker!) and this awesome blog and discussion group run by some friends of mine.

A Description of My Recent Musical Exploits

So, by now you probably know that I'm really into making music, but I am also a huge fan of finding new music and going to music concerts!! And I've had a blessedly music filled week or so! Here are a few of the highlights:

In Which I Address A Question Posed on Friday

First of all, this was an amazing weekend - the Drag Show was absolutely crazy, in an awesome way, the gender movie night, where Normal was shown seemed to go really well, Convo was really amazing and the Admissions Panel and Drag Panel were each really exciting. There's a new group that's talking about body positivity that's great too. All in all, a good weekend. In light of the Admissions Panel, I want to address a question that came up:

How do you deal with being plopped in the middle of nowhere, in a relatively homogeneous place, far from any major cultural centers?

So It's Finally Spring ...

... And I'm enjoying my classes so far. I realized today that Geo 110 is the first 100-level class I've taken since last Winter. What I mean by that is that it's nice to have a class with 30 pages of reading a week instead of 100, like all my other classes. My French class hasn't really vamped up yet either, so I'm left with some spare time (which is quite the rarity). So I have used it to identify and apply to internships that I think not only sound impressive, but will actually be things I want to participate in - these non-profits stand for really great ideals and do very effective work, whether locally, regionally, or nationally. Hopefully at least one of the groups will give me an opportunity to learn about political organizing and other such issues.

A Quick Note

If you are an Accepted Student to Carleton (and I hope you all are!), and you are coming to Accepted Student Days either the weekend of April 10th or April 17th (and I hope you all are!), then you should come to a Diversity Panel from 4-5pm on each Friday in Boliou 104. I will be participating along with a few other students talking about experiencing diversity at Carleton - in the classroom, dorms, activities, and anywhere else you can imagine. It should be interesting, and I would love to meet any of my avid readers (please don't disillusion me by telling me no one but my mother reads all this). Hope to see you there!
