I'm pretty sure the UPA (the Ultimate Players Association, the governing body for frisbee) gathered all its members together earlier this year and brainstormed the absolute worst time to host a tournament that Carleton students would be attending. They briefly considered 10th weekend, but they're not that mean - they thought holding a tournie over finals weekend and having the entirety of Syzygy fail out of college would be a little over the top. So instead they decided on 9th weekend, the time when students are cramming to finish papers, study for tests, and wrap up group projects! Ah yes, how we love the UPA.
Okay, maybe it wasn't that terrible. All I had to do was do some writing on my final research paper for my Poli Sci class, and I did get a bit done on that during the car ride. We left for St. Louis on Friday during 5a, so at about 3:30 in the afternoon. We were one of the last cars to leave and we took a slight (200 mile) sight-seeing detour (we got lost) in Illinois, so we didn't get into the hotel until 1:45ish am. After several (four, to be precise) excellent hours of sleep, we grabbed some breakfast and headed off to the fields for our 8am game.
It turned out to be a quite successful tournament. On Saturday we beat Truman State and University of Kansas each 13-0 (according to the UPA website... although I thought I remembered Kansas scoring on us at least once), beat Colorado College 13-4, and then lost to Emory 12-8. After the games we went to what was introduced to us rookies as the "Street of Dreams" for Chipotle and/or Noodles and FroYo. I'm pretty sure everyone fell asleep before 9:30 that night.
Sunday beat University of St. Louis 15-2 in the prequarters game, beat Colorado College 9-7 in the quarterfinals, and Iowa State 13-8 in the semifinals. We faced University of Colorado, Boulder in the finals and, unfortunately, lost, but still - we broke seed and came in second in the tournament. Not too shabby.
