If you visit us this summer, you'll meet with at least one of our Fellows. These rising seniors have shared why they chose Carleton, and we'll feature their comments throughout the week. These first comments come from Annie Mark '12 from Maryland:
My parents tried to start the college hunting process with me when I was in eighth grade because my older brother (who was a junior in high school) was looking at schools, so they thought, “Why not kill two birds with one stone,” but being the obnoxious 13-year old that I was, I demanded they drop me off at Grandma and Grandpa’s house instead. Three glorious spring break vacations later, my life descended into never-ending road trips as dear old Mumsie and Popsicle whisked me around the Northeast and, OY VAY, Ohio. Even though I did find a number of schools that I liked (and battled the parental units over looking at their alma mater, where my brother was also going to college), I hadn’t yet found the IT SCHOOL.
The summer before my senior year of high school, I spent five weeks in China with my cousin’s high school Chinese class, but that’s a story for another time. When I was abroad, Mom emailed me to discuss my schedule of college interviews. She mentioned Carleton, where I knew two former high school classmates were studying, but I myself knew very little about the school. I figured “why not look at it,” never for a second imagining that I would like Carleton because it’s located in freezing Minnesota. When I came home from China I called one of the two guys going to Carleton to talk about why he chose Carleton. In about twenty minutes he had sold it to me on the phone and I was super excited to visit Carleton.
The parental units and I arrived in sunny Northfield in the beginning of August and I was (not gonna lie) surprised by how warm it was (isn’t Minnesota supposed to be covered in snow 24/7?). The next day I did the info session, tour, and interview and walked out of each knowing that Carleton was for me. I told my parents in the hotel room that night that I was probably going to apply Early Decision to Carleton and didn’t need to look at the other schools (of course I went on to interview at the other six colleges my mom had made appointments at….no need to make them panic).
What was it about Carleton that I knew it was my one true love? The trimester system was a big reason. I came out of a high school at which my academics and theater commitment took up one hundred billion percent took up my time. Carleton was the only college I looked at that allowed me to have enough time for studying, extracurricular activities, and down time. The other major reason was the feeling I had the two times I visited Carleton. Something about the campus, both when it was empty in the summer and full of students in the fall, clicked with me and I immediately felt at home when I set foot on the campus. I also thought that Oscar, the stuffed penguin in the Library, was cool.
So yeah. That’s my long winded explanation for why I came to Carleton. If you want it broken down, here it is: TRIMESTER SYSTEM, GUT FEELING, PENGUIN.
(For those of you not from the mid-west/Minnesota, there are NO actual penguins in Minnesota. Except for the ones at the zoo.)
