Soph Thoughts

"I don't miss the beginning of freshman year Maya," and other thoughts on being a sophomore.

It’s kind of surreal to think that this time last year, I was navigating the Weitz, figuring out if I had friends to buy Friday Flowers for, and wondering if I called my mom too often.

I don’t miss the beginning of freshman year Maya. And maybe I’ll be saying the same thing about sophomore Maya next year.

My first week has passed and I just want to take some time to reflect on it.

  1. First week adjusting is always hard. I find myself trying to walk on a tightrope between socializing and keeping up with my work.
  2. I don’t call or facetime my family as often as I did last year.
  3. I only have six more classes till I declare my major — yikes!
  4. Why does it rain so much?
  5. I missed the squirrels, rabbits, and cats.
  6. I don’t wish I were a freshman again, but I do wish there was more wonder and excitement involved in creating a new home.
  7. Carleton students are (for the most part) very warm-hearted, and I think I take that for granted.
Week 2 Maya

Both nervous and happy to be back, I’m hoping this year is productive and transformative. We’ll just have to wait and see.

I’d like to think there’s some element of symbolism in finding this tucked away campus spot before my classes began — analyze as you will.

Maya is a potential SOAN major and WGST concentrator from a Southern California suburb. Besides eating oatmeal and writing to-do lists, she is passionate about social issues and being a good friend. On campus, she edits “infemous” (an intersectional feminist zine), also works at The Cave, and is constantly trying to find a good study spot in the Libe. Ask her to make you a playlist!
