International Applicants

Carleton welcomes applicants from around the world and will evaluate academic work done in foreign education systems.

Scholarships for International Students

Financial support for international students is now broadly expanded, although we still have limited funds for international scholarships. The following scholarship opportunities are available:

  • Up to six full scholarships covering Carleton's comprehensive fee, including tuition, room and board (approximately $45,645 per year).
  • Up to six partial scholarships with a maximum value of one-half of Carleton's comprehensive fee.

Several key resources have made these scholarships available:

  • Starr Foundation Grants: (largest source of funding) Scholarship opportunities for students from Asia.
  • Kellogg Scholarships: Financial aid for highly qualified non-U.S. citizens to attend Carleton.
  • George International Fellowships: Aid to students from developing nations who determine economic need and exceptional academic promise.
  • Nason Scholarships: A generous gift from a Carleton alumnus provides for a scholarship for young Singaporeans. Like all Carleton scholarships, the Nason is need-based. The scholarship covers up to the full comprehensive fee, depending on the specific financial situation of each scholarship recipient, for four years of study leading to a B.A. degree.

Applying for Any of These Scholarships

Please submit the Carleton application by the appropriate Early or Regular Decision deadline. All international students who apply for financial aid will be considered for the appropriate international scholarships.

International students applying for financial aid need complete only the following two forms: International Student Financial Aid Application, and Certification of Finances. You may download these forms now. They should be submitted to Carleton by February 15. To begin the application process to Carleton, click here.

Students who hold dual citizenship (including U.S.), those who have permanent resident status (I-151, I-551, or I-551C), and a limited number of eligible non-citizens may qualify for federal financial aid. These students should review the Financial Aid section of this web site.

Notice to International Freshman Applicants

Carleton has always welcomed Early Decision applications from international students who are not requesting any financial assistance. We have traditionally asked students applying for international scholarships to use our Regular Decision option, to allow all applicants to be considered at one time for scholarship assistance.

However, due to increased demand, Carleton will consider a few exceptionally qualified international scholarship applicants for Early Decision. This decision is binding and students must withdraw all other applications once they have accepted Carleton's offer of admission. During Early Decision only a very limited number of full and partial international student scholarships will be awarded.

Students who have applied to Carleton via Early Decision will be either admitted, denied or rolled over to the Regular Decision pool. Many highly-qualified candidates may be rolled over to Regular Decision, since the majority of our international scholarships will continue to be awarded via the Regular Decision process.

Students moved into the Regular Decision pool would no longer be subject to Carleton's binding Early Decision plan, and could continue to pursue their applications to other colleges and universities.

Students who are admitted with an international scholarship via Regular Decision have until May 1 to confirm their acceptance; failure to notify Carleton by this deadline may result in loss of the scholarship.
