Bassirou lives in Faculty Club
Faculty Club is a series of three interconnected buildings located at 715-721 East Second Street. As their name implies, they were once used for employee housing, but are now used to house students. It is considered to be an off-campus house and is available to sophomores, juniors and seniors. Faculty Club has 24/7 "Quiet Hours."

Bassirou likes The CMC (Center for Math & Computing)
The CMC is home to the math and computer science departments at Carleton, as well as extra computer labs. Students can go to the Math Skills Center for tutoring or just to ask a question about a particularly pesky partial differential. The floor in the first floor lobby is made out of Penrose Tiles, which are made of a limited number of shapes but never repeat the same pattern twice.

Just a short walk from campus, Chapati serves delicious Indian food--including an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet most days.

Religion 122 - Introduction to Islam was a favorite course for Bassirou:I knew I was heading to a great college but I never thought that classes would have such a huge influence on my personal life. Introduction to Islam during my freshmen year taught me more about a religion [about which] I knew most of the fundamentals. The things I learned about the history, philosophy, and theology of Islam reshaped my approach to religion and helped me have a better understanding of the interactions between religious groups and politicians in my home country. Second, I never thought a French class would be one of my greatest learning experiences in college. Cultural Expressions of West Africa's Mande with Professor Cherif Keita made me passionate about cultures from neighboring countries to Senegal. I spent more time exploring the relations between the cultural norms and values of the Mande and the outcome of political crisis in countries where the majority are Mande than studying for my probability final exam. That was the extent of my enthusiasm for the subject.

Bassirou says:I think Carleton is very supportive of all religions. Just a couple of weeks ago I found myself leading a prayer that involved not only Muslims, but people of Jewish faith and Christian faiths. If you had asked me five years ago if I could imagine I'd be doing that one day, I would say no.

Q: What academic question are you currently struggling with?A: How to model daily ozone levels in Minnesota?
-
Q: Did financial aid influence your college decision?A: Carleton admitted me with a full financial aid package. I was thrilled when I saw the offer and now I am grateful to Carleton for the privilege of being here with all the assistance I could ever dream of. My mother often tells me that I should always put an extra effort in whatever I am engaged in at Carleton because the school has made a huge investment in my education, it is a privilege that many would be thrilled to have.
-
Q: What other schools did you seriously consider?A: Swarthmore, Macalester
-
Q: Why did you choose Carleton?A: I am a curious person. The education system in Senegal offered me the opportunity to have a broad understanding of academic fields such as history, geography, biology, French, etc., [that] I missed during the two years I prepared for the IB in New Mexico. So, I looked for an environment where I could continue my quest for knowledge in fields that weren't primarily mine (mathematics and physics) while building a solid background in mathematics.
-
Q: Any advice for high school students on their college search?A: If possible, visit schools you are applying to. Admissions tours will be great everywhere but nothing will be more valuable than interactions with the students. I recommend an overnight stay if possible.
-
Q: What campus jobs have you had while at Carleton?A: I've been a French Tutor, Custodial services, French TA, Physics grader, Math grader, Research Assistant.
-
Q: How would you describe the students at Carleton?A: Carleton students are generally fun. It's difficult to categorize the student body...but if you are serious about academics, funny, and laid back, it shouldn't be difficult to find a circle of friends!
-
Q: How would you describe campus life at Carleton?A: For the things I like to do, I have always found people willing to join me in numbers. Whether it is playing soccer every weekend, making an intramural [team] during winter term, practicing my faith, community service, or finding emotional or academic support, I have always found members of the Carleton community willing to join or help me. Because of that, I have been able to keep a very good balance between the rigor of the classes at Carleton.
-
Q: What are your interests & hobbies?A: Soccer, politics, community service, participation in student organizations.
