Q: "You know you’re at Carleton when..."A: ...you're not the only one to get excited by the idea of a Scrabble Club.
-
Q: What campus jobs have you had while at Carleton?A: I work at the Student Computing and Information Center (SCIC). It's a great job, and I'm having a great time learning about computers and meeting lots of Carleton students.
-
Q: Have you done any volunteering at Carleton?A: I cleared the invasive buckthorn plant in the Arb during New Student Week. It was a surprisingly fun and even therapeutic experience.
-
Q: What are your interests & hobbies?A: Listening to music, reading, hanging out with friends, playing tag (seriously), playing the violin, watching movies, going on runs and dog walks, and having nice snacks.
-
Q: What surprised you about Carleton?A: I'm surprised how even though I'm extremely busy with work, I can still manage to have fun and socialize.
-
Q: Where have you lived on campus?A: I live in Myers. My floor is really close, and we all have a good time together. Many of my meals are spent with friends from my floor. Last night, we were all a little tired of studying, so we decided to go play outside in the rain. The rain soon stopped, but we didn't - we all played tag from midnight to around 1 am! It was great.
-
Q: What are your favorite places in Northfield, the Twin Cities, and beyond?A: I really enjoy the Tavern and Sweet Lou's, which sells amazing waffles. EconoFoods has a surprisingly great selection of foods, and the natural foods store is amazing!
-
Q: What sports or athletic activities have you participated in?A: I recently joined the Badminton Club, which I am super excited about. Also, I go on runs in the Arb multiple times a week. It's my favorite part of the campus. Last week, I got to run by a family of deer!Other answers to this question

Q: How would you describe campus life at Carleton?A: There is always something really cool going on on campus. You have opportunities to join a huge range of clubs, and there is literally something for everyone. As for residential and social life, everything is pressure free and relaxed. There is ample opportunity to party if you want to. There are even more opportunities to attend concerts, improv troupes, dances, and a whole lot more. There is never a time when you would ever say "there's nothing to do on campus today!"
-
Q: What’s been your most interesting assignment?A: My first essay for my European Music and Politics Class - I wrote about the relationship between music and nationalism in Switzerland.
-
Q: What's the most important thing you've learned at Carleton OUTSIDE the classroom?A: I've learned to try out for anything that you might want to do. You may just find your next calling.
-
Q: How would you describe the students at Carleton?A: The students all seem to be extremely happy about being here. Everyone is excited about who they're meeting and what they're learning. On the other hand, someone who only cares about academic learning would not fit in well. Carleton students realize that academics are only half (a very important half) of the learning experience. If all you want is a place to do your work, Carleton is not the place for you - it has too many cool things to be experienced!
-
Q: What would surprise your high school friends about you now?A: My friends from Massachusetts all stared at me with blank faces when I told them I was going to a school in Minnesota! It will definitely surprise them when they hear that Northfield is a great college town, and not a "frozen outpost" some of them imagined.
-
Q: Any advice for high school students on their college search?A: When visiting schools, don't get nervous if you don't find that One perfect school for you. If none of your schools say "YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO ATTEND ME!" That's probably because you'd be happy at many places. What's important is finding the little things - the quirks - that set one small liberal arts college (or one huge university) apart from another.
-
Q: Which professors have been your favorites? Why?A: I love Herr Roger Paas, my German professor. He forces us to learn German...in German! From Day One, he was speaking hardly any English, and it's meant that we've all really learned very quickly. He's extremely supportive and very funny.
-
Q: What’s been your hardest class?A: Elementary German is by far my hardest class. It's so different from Spanish. But I'm up for a challenge!
-
Q: What other schools did you seriously consider?A: Dickinson College (PA), Earlham College (IN), Franklin College of Switzerland (Switzerland), Hamilton College (NY), Haverford College (PA), and Williams College (MA).
-
Q: How would you describe academic life at Carleton?A: Academic life at Carleton is rigorous. What separates it from being the same kind of daunting "rigorous" as in high school is that you have a lot of time to do the work. Most classes meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. This means that you often have all of Tuesday and Thursday to complete an assignment. Only taking three classes means that you can only have three classes worth of work to do, which is great compared to the 5 or 6 classes in high school. Also, having classes spread out over the day allows you to do work at different times. The fact that classes are only 10 weeks means that you start right away and go at a steady pace. This might seem a little overwhelming at first, but it is not hard to keep up once you realize that you need to!
