The department promotes learning to read subtle and complex texts, to write clear and persuasive prose, and to think and speak metaphorically and logically. The curriculum includes English and American literature organized by historical period, topic, and genre; African, African American, Native American, Asian American, and postcolonial literature; modern and ancient critical theory; analysis of film, television, and drama; and writing instruction in rhetoric, poetry, fiction, screenwriting, and playwriting. Faculty members organize interdisciplinary courses focusing on the relationship between literature and other disciplines. Off-campus study options include theater in London, Irish literature in Dublin, Galway, and Belfast, and regional literature in California.
