The program focuses on mastery of the German language, and by the end of their first year, students have the oral proficiency to live and study in a German-speaking country. Carleton programs are offered in Graz, Austria, and in Munich, Berlin, and Nuremberg, Germany. Students learn the philosophical and literary foundations crucial to understanding Germany and read the original writings of important historical figures such as Goethe, Schiller, Kafka, Brecht, and Bachmann. Students can live in a language house directed by a native speaker.
You can major in this subject.

Peter Schlesinger '12 says:I love Herr Roger Paas, my German professor. He forces us to learn German...in German! From Day One, he was speaking hardly any English, and it's meant that we've all really learned very quickly. He's extremely supportive and very funny.
What’s been your hardest class? Peter Schlesinger '12 says:Elementary German is by far my hardest class. It's so different from Spanish. But I'm up for a challenge!
