While developing their research, analytical, and writing skills, students study some of the major civilizations that humans have created during the past 3,000 years. They also confront the specific problems of interpreting the past—conflicting opinions among historians and the difficulties of reconstructing past societies. A comparative perspective and significant knowledge of the rich cultural diversity of the past is attained through courses in European, American, East Asian, South Asian, Latin American, Middle Eastern/Central Asian, and African history. Faculty members encourage the use of foreign language in student research.
