Grand Marais

Situated two hours north of Duluth on the North Shore of Lake Superior, Grand Marais is one of the top 10 art colonies in the United States. Noted for its pristine natural beauty, this harbor town on the largest of the Great Lakes is located at the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the Superior National Forest. Visitors enjoy some of the finest hiking, canoeing, and birding in the nation.

North House

This unique school is dedicated to promoting and preserving traditional northern crafts, knowledge, skills, and stories, both past and present. Its goal is to enrich lives and build a shared community in a student-centered learning environment that inspires the hands, heart, and mind. Executive director Greg Wright is the son of Frank Wright ’50, former treasurer at Carleton.

Activities

You will arrive on Thursday evening in time to participate “hands on” crafting dinner with the entire group. Pizza fired in North House’s traditional wood-fired brick bread oven is on the menu! Friday is class day at the Folk School. Choose to carve a classic northern canoe paddle using traditional hand tools, make & fire Raku pottery, learn the age-old craft of print making, or develop your skills by making old-fashioned soap. Saturday morning Prof. Timothy Lloyd will talk about nature drawing before leading an excursion to Artists’ Point in Grand Marais. There will be free time on Saturday to attend the annual Grand Marais Arts Festival (now entering its 15th year), and, depending on the weather, possible sailing on the North House’s 50-foot gaff-rigged schooner, Hjordis. This adventure ends on Saturday evening, but you are welcome to extend your stay.

Accommodations

Make your own reservations at the Best Western Superior Inn (218-387-2240). A block of rooms will be held until May 15. Please ask for the Carleton College block of rooms.
