Join Professor Ruth Weiner and exhibition director and curator Laurel Bradley for a glorious weekend exploring the Twin Cities art scene, including the new Guthrie Theater, the Theater de la Jeune Lune, the renovated Walker Art Center, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and other galleries.
THEATERS
The Guthrie Theater’s new signature theater complex on the Mississippi River includes three stages: a 1,100-seat thrust stage for large-scale and classical plays, a 500-seat proscenium stage for intimate and contemporary plays and international productions, and a smaller black-box theater for new work in development. We will meet with directorial staff at the Guthrie and attend The Merchant of Venice and The Glass Menagerie.
Founded in France in 1978, Theatre de la Jeune Lune has received many awards for its productions, including the 1993 American Theater Critic’s Association New Play Award, an AT&T OnStage Award, and a First Bank Sally Ordway Irvine Award for Artistic Vision. We will see Don Juan Giovanni at the Jeune Lune.
ART GALLERIES
Paint meets pixels and anime meets matinee at the beautifully renovated Walker Art Center. With its new galleries, refurbished cinema, Wolfgang Puck restaurants, renovated shop and library, and state-of-the-art theater, the Walker is where art meets life. A multidisciplinary arts organization, it is recognized internationally for its innovative approaches. Go behind-the-scenes with Howard Oransky, project manager of this wonderfully remodeled and expanded museum. Other museums we will visit include the Museum of Russian Art, the Mill City Museum, and the Minnesota Center for Book Arts.
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts recently opened its new wing, increasing its gallery space by 40 percent. Laurel Bradley will lead our group through several of the exhibits.
