This adventure gave Carleton alumni, family, and friends an opportunity to explore a beautiful landscape and learn about photography, photo essays, and wilderness management "in the company of friends." Two of the travelers, Mark Gilbert '85 and Deidre Lorenzo, compiled the slide shows below (click to watch) from the photos of their fellow travelers. THE ADVENTURE

Carleton College invites you to join Associate Professor of Art Linda Rossi and alumnus expert Bill Edwards ’56 on a four-day winter adventure to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Winter is a breathtaking time to explore Yellowstone, particularly through the lens of a camera. Linda will help photographers - from novice to professional - use a variety of techniques to affect the content of their images and the images' moral, biological, and aesthetic implications.* Learn also about the history of travel essays and how to create your own personal travelogue. Bill will share his knowledge of the Yellowstone Basin and the challenges of wilderness management. Linda and Bill will help you discover this special place and create a personal story through your photographs. We'll start our exploration of Yellowstone at the Albright Visitor Center & Museum, with exhibits and videos regarding the history of the area: the pre-1800 native populations, the mountain men, early exploration, Army days, and early National Park Service. The Jackson Gallery features original photographs by William Henry Jackson and paintings by Thomas Moran. We'll spend the evening at the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel, where Linda and Bill will lead discussions of Yellowstone's early photographers and park history. The next day, we'll take a Snowcoach to our comfortable lodgings at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge. There, we’ll use Yellowstone’s wealth of resources, both indoors and out, for our photographic and wilderness explorations. There also may be time to explore the park via snowshoes, cross-country skis, or snowcoach. We'll spend our last night at the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel where we'll enjoy a farewell dinner and program. *This adventure would be appropriate for any photographer, regardless of level of expertise.  Because Linda’s sessions will focus on the communicative, rather than technical aspects of wilderness photography, however, participants should familiarize themselves with their cameras prior to the adventure.

THE FACULTY

Associate Professor of Art Linda Rossi teaches photography, digital photography, and Critical Issues in Contemporary Art. Her work is primarily in large-scale photo installation - including video and sculpture - to illuminate both historical and current issues. She has received numerous Jerome, McKnight, and Minnesota State Arts grants. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including the Stroganov Palace Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, and the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art in Iran. Her work can be viewed in the permanent collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Linda Rossi's Art Gallery Exhibition Sound Suspended Bill Edwards ’56 received his M.S. in Conservation and Wildlife from the University of Wyoming and his Ph.D. in Plant Ecology from the University of Nebraska. He has taught a variety of biology classes at the secondary and college levels, receiving several awards for teaching excellence. He served ten years in the Wyoming State House of Representatives, where he was awarded several Outstanding Legislator awards and served as Caucus Chairman and Minority Whip. He served as a Seasonal Ranger-Naturalist in Grand Teton National Park and Rocky Mountain National Park and carried out studies in Yellowstone National Park. Recently, he taught classes at the Teton Science School in Grand Teton National Park and for the Yellowstone Institute in Yellowstone National Park. Bill’s wealth of experience and knowledge has added greatly to previous Alumni Adventures, and we’re pleased that he’s agreed to join us in Yellowstone.

COST

Double occupancy: $750.00 per person
Single occupancy: $975.00 per person Cost includes 4 nights lodging; 4 breakfasts, lunches, & dinners; and snowcoach transportation between lodges. Cost does not include alcoholic beverages, gratuities for motorcoach driver or housecleaning services, or initial admission to Yellowstone Park ($25/vehicle, or Annual or Lifetime Passes). This adventure is limited to 20 participants. To reserve your spot, you must register by November 15, 2010. After this date, Yellowstone will release any remaining rooms to the general public and we won't be able to guarantee you a place on the adventure.
