The Greek isles and west coast of Turkey offer glorious archaeological sites and landscapes. Spend two nights in a first-class Athens hotel and 12 nights cruising aboard the comfortable, 198-cabin Aegean Odyssey. Visit the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum in Athens. Explore Bronze Age Mycenae (pictured above) and the partially-reconstructed Minoan palace at Knossos, Crete. Discover the vast, splendid ancient Greco-Roman sites of Ephesus and Aphrodisias. Prices start at $4,695 per person for this 16-day program, hotel accommodations for two nights in Athens and 12 nights aboard ship, an extensive program of excursions, all meals aboard ship (including wine with dinner, afternoon pastries and tea/coffee, and late night snacks), and more.
What to Expect
You must be in good physical condition and able to make long walks unassisted over uneven terrain and up and down steps. All participants are expected to be physically active, to enjoy traveling as part of a group, and to be ready to experience cultural differences. Day 1 DEPART NORTH AMERICA
Day 2 ATHENS, Greece: Arrive and transfer to our Athens hotel.
Day 3 ATHENS: AM visit to the Acropolis and new Acropolis Museum. PM at leisure.
Day 4 ATHENS | PIRAEUS | EMBARKATION: AM at leisure in Athens. PM transfer to the port of Piraeus to embark Aegean Odyssey. Depart late today for Nauplion.
Day 5 NAUPLION | MYCENAE | EPIDAURUS: AM visit to the Bronze Age fortress/palace of Mycenae. PM at leisure aboard ship or in Nauplion, or choose an optional excursion to the ancient theater of Epidaurus, renowned for its acoustics.
Day 6 MONEMVASIA: AM walking tour of the charming lower town of Monemvasia, including the 13th century Christós Elkómenos cathedral. PM optional hike to the upper town to see the Byzantine church of Agia Sophia. Alternatively, you are free to explore the town on your own or relax aboard ship.
Day 7 RETHYMNON, CRETE | KNOSSOS | CHANIA: AM visit to the Bronze Age Minoan palace of Knossos. PM optional excursion to charming Chania, or you are free to explore the town of Rethymnon on your own or relax aboard ship.
Day 8 RHODES | LINDOS: AM visit to Rhodes’ Old Town and the Citadel of the Knights of St. John. PM at leisure, or join an optional excursion to the acropolis at Lindos with its 4th century B.C. Temple of Lindian Athena.
Day 9 DELOS | MYKONOS: AM visit to the tiny island and ancient religious sanctuary of Delos. PM cruise to nearby Mykonos for time at leisure.
Day 10 SAMOS | KUSADASI, Turkey | EPHESUS: AM exploration of Samos’s Archaeological Museum in Vathy. Drive to the scant ruins of the enormous Heraion (Temple of Hera), and enjoy a wine tasting at the Museum of Wine. Early PM cruise to nearby Kusadasi, Turkey. Spend the afternoon at Ephesus, one of the Aegean’s largest,most spectacular ancient cities.
Day 11 KUSADASI | APHRODISIAS: Full-day excursion to the fabulous site of ancient Aphrodisias and its museum filled with masterpieces.
Day 12 AT SEA: Enjoy the chance to relax, attend onboard lectures, and take advantage of the ship’s amenities as she makes her way to Istanbul.
Day 13 ISTANBUL: AM exploration of the glorious Byzantine cathedral of Hagia Sophia, the Ottoman Topkapi Palace, and the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Camii). PM at leisure aboard ship, or to explore the city independently. Overnight aboard ship in Istanbul.
Day 14 ISTANBUL: AM visit to the Süleymaniye Mosque and the exquisite Church of St. Saviour in Chora. PM at sea; relax and enjoy lectures and the ship’s amenities.
Day 15 MOUNT ATHOS, Greece | SKIATHOS: While cruising past slowly, gaze upon the monasteries of Mt. Athos. PM at leisure on the picturesque island of Skiathos.
Day 16 PIRAEUS | ATHENS | FLY HOME: AM disembarkation and transfer to the Athens airport for flights home.

Lecturer/Host - Nancy Wilkie
Nancy Wilkie is a distinguished archaeologist and professor who has lectured on numerous study programs throughout the world, including many to Greece and Turkey. Nancy is the William H. Laird Professor of Classics, Anthropology, and the Liberal Arts, and Co-Director of the Archaeology Concentration at Carleton College, where she has been on the faculty since 1974. A graduate of Stanford University (1964), Nancy received her M.A. and Ph.D. (1975) from the University of Minnesota. She began her archaeological career in 1968 when she joined a pioneering program of survey and excavation in the region of the Palace of Nestor at Pylos in Greece. Since then Nancy has worked on archaeological projects in Greece, Egypt, and Nepal, and has authored more than 30 articles and co-edited three books on archaeology. Nancy is currently a member of the Cultural Property Advisory Committee of the U.S. Department of State. This committee advises the President on requests from foreign governments for import restrictions on their antiquities under the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Cultural Property.
