Classics and anthropology professor Nancy Wilkie, professor emeritus of art history Dale Haworth, and music professor Lawrence Archbold will be our guides as we explore this destination rich in history, heritage, arts, and culture. From exploring its archeology firsthand to enjoying its varied arts scene and opera, there will be something for everyone on this Southwestern trip.
ARCHEOLOGY
Visit Bandelier National Monument where 600 years ago the ancestors of modern Pueblo people built thriving communities. Several thousand ancestral Pueblo dwellings are found among the pink mesas and sheer-walled canyons. The best-known archeological sites, in Frijoles Canyon near the Visitor Center, were inhabited from the 1100s into the mid-1500s. Wilkie will be our guide for a daytrip to this monument.
OPERA
You’ll attend two operas in while in Santa Fe. On Thursday evening enjoy a buffet on the opera grounds, a talk by an opera staff member, and a performance of Adriana Mater by Kaija Saariaho. Set in a country at war, Adriana Mater’s themes of revenge, forgiveness, and redemption are sure to touch your consciousness in profound ways. On Saturday night you’ll return for the delightful The Marriage of Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.ART
Santa Fe’s contemporary art scene is in the process of expansion. Dale Haworth, professor emeritus of art history, will update us on the "new" Santa Fe, including Site Santa Fe, the famous avant-garde exhibition gallery and the future TAI gallery of contemporary Asian arts, crafts, and photographs, among others.ACCOMMODATIONS
