Class Activities

There are plenty of options from which to choose, and NO required classes or exams. Set your own pace, and enjoy the weekend. Start planning now and let us hear from you! Check out the Reunion Schedule of Events in your Registration Packet booklet or on this website (click here). The following special Reunion events and activities are for our class only:

  • Get into the 50th spirit by bringing things to the Reunion. Share the products of your creativity by exhibiting them at the Friday afternoon Class of ‘59 Arts reception in Hulings Hall. Show your Carleton memorabilia in the Watson Lounge. On the menu above, click on "Creative Arts Show" (or here) and "Memorabilia" (or here) to learn more.

  • Consider joining a pre-Reunion Engage-and-Reflect discussion group on Thursday afternoon. For details, click here.

  • Participate in a variety of discussions.
  • A “roads less traveled” panel of three classmates (John Garner, Ann McClelland Johns, and Hans Nelson) moderated by Dave Burns will relate a few of their extraordinary experiences, followed by an open mike discussion.
  • Chris Stocker, with help from Jim Curtis and Lori Olson Steuer, will take you on a journey we are calling “History, Memory, and Commemoration”
  • Trish Sloan Herbert, an experienced group leader and author, will explore with you “Looking Ahead/Journeying Well: Making the most of the years to come”.
  • Jim Miller will lead a review of a fascinating book about American political character and cycles. You don’t have to read the book to join the discussion.
  • Andrea Grove Iseminger and Carolyn Kumpula Cade will talk about travel opportunities you may want to investigate further. Bring your own travel recommendations to share.

  • Socialize at luncheons, receptions, and dinners. Our Reunion begins with a barbecue Thursday night on the Hill of the 3 Oaks, with live jazz by Gary Iseminger and his band. It ends with a dinner and party in the Tea Room celebrating special achievements of our class with music by Norma Johnson and Danny Guerrero. After the evening meals, stop in the Watson Lounge for snacks and more conversation.

  • Join our class in the Saturday morning Alumni Parade. Upon registration, you will receive straw hats, scarves, and ties with our ’59 logo. Please wear white shirts or blouses – no T-shirts!

  • Tell the Carleton College Oral History Project about important Carleton events which you witnessed or in which you played a significant role. The Project’s purpose is to augment the documentation of college history by recording interviews with observers and participants. You can sign up for it when registering in Watson Hall.

  • Before departing from the campus, remember deceased classmates in a quiet memorial service in the Japanese Garden.

Other Reunion events you and your spouse/partner might want to attend:

  • Professors Roy Grow’s and Burt Levin’s analyses of China and the Far East.
  • President Rob Oden’s reflections on Egypt and the Middle East.
  • Ian Barbour’s thoughts on Science and Religion.
  • Judy Peschken Darst’s piano concert.
