September 2005 letter
Dear Classmate,
In 1976:
- Gerald Ford was President of the United States;
- Pol Pot became prime minister of Cambodia;
- a new 4 cylinder, hardtop Mustang cost $3,525;
- “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” won picture of the year;
- the first 5.25-inch floppy disk was invented, and
- our class graduated from Carleton.
Since then, Cambodia has become a trading partner, “Million Dollar Baby” has replaced “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, and 5.25-inch floppy discs are obsolete. How have you changed in that time?
- Are your politics different?
- Has your family grown?
- Did you change careers?
- Have you lived your dreams or found new ones?
- Do you need reading glasses?
Come compare notes at our upcoming 30th reunion, June 15-18! A group of ’76 Carls (check the list in the left margin) is planning the events, with your input. Aligning ourselves with things that age well and still have body and zip, the theme for our 30th is fine wines and spirits -- “’76 uncorked!” -- and our handle, Spirits of ’76.
We need your help. Consider the following questions.
- What will you want to do at reunion?
- What professor(s) will you want to see?
- What movies will you want to see during a pajama party at Parish House?
- What music will you bring to blast out the windows?
- What classmates will you want to see?
- For our programs, what topics will you want to know more about?
Our class will be housed in Parish House (the first time many of us will have gotten to see this famed place!), with overflow at Hill House. We’re counting on you to come and enjoy off-campus life again, this time with no RAs!
The ’76 Web site will be up at http://apps.carleton.edu/alumni/classes/1976, by the time you receive this letter. Check it out. Help us plan the best program we’ve ever had by sending in your ideas and suggestions and adding your notes to the bulletin board.
We are all aging like fine wine. Come join your classmates - become part of ’76 uncorked!
