One Man Saw It Coming
In 2000, a numbers cruncher at a Boston derivatives firm, Harry Markopolous, first alerted the Boston office of the SEC to his belief that Bernie Madoff was running a fraudulent investment scheme. Over the next eight years, Markopolous and the investigative team he assembled proceeded to gather more and more evidence and to provide increasingly persistent and detailed notices of the fraud to the SEC. Markopolous’ warnings fell on deaf ears. In his book, Markopolous details not only his team’s investigation and frustration, but also the various industry conflicts and agency shortcomings that allowed the largest Ponzi scheme in U.S. history ($65 billion) to continue for nearly a decade.
