Please join our local Carleton community for a fun gathering and a fascinating program on American history.
Dirk Hartog ’70 is a Carleton alumnus and, at Princeton University, the Class of 1921 Bicentennial Professor of the History of American Law and Liberty. He has spent his scholarly life working on the social history of American law, obsessed with the difficulties and opportunities that come with studying how broad political and cultural themes have been expressed in ordinary legal conflicts.
Professor Hartog is currently working on a study of inheritance conflicts, culminating in a book to be released next Fall. While his research contributes to and engages with debates in history, law, sociology, anthropology, and moral philosophy, it also speaks to anyone who has contemplated being old or unwell, or who has had to take care of family members who are old or unwell. It provokes reflection about the cycle of life, of what one owes and is owed, as one moves through life as a family member.
