Join fellow Carls for Professor Al Montero’s lecture “The Brazilian Turnaroud: A Serious Country At Last?” Global attention was riveted on Brazil during the World Cup this summer and it will be focused again on the country when Brazil hosts the 2016 Olympic Summer Games. The way we think about Brazil today is as the 'B' in the BRICS and an up-and-coming country with much to offer despite a recent period of low growth. But this view contrasts sharply with what expert observers of the country wrote and said during the first decade after its return to democracy in 1985. Back then, Brazil had a political system that was described as "feckless" and it had an economy that was considered to be "drunk" on hyperinflation. How did the turnaround in Brazil happen? Is it real and will it last? Has Brazil become a serious country at long last?

This event is open to all Carleton alumni, current and prospective students, parents, friends, and family. Light refreshments and beverages will be provided.

Space is limited—RSVP no later than August 4 using the registration form found here.

A final email with the address and directions will be sent on Thursday, August 7 so please be sure to include an email address when you RSVP.

Questions? Contact the Office of Alumni Relations at alumni-office@carleton.edu or 800-729-2586.

This event is also a send-off to Carleton for new students in the Class of 2018. They and their parents will have a special opportunity to meet each other as well as get some hands-on advice from current students, recent grads, and experienced alumni.
