8:00 pm: Production of Smash

This wonderful Shavian romp depicts the trials and tribulations of millionaire socialist Sidney Trefusis who ditches his beautiful bride, Henrietta, at the altar so he can devote all of his energy to the socialist cause. Disguising himself as a groundskeeper at a posh women’s college, he begins to plant the seeds of proletariat unrest. Sidney believes that mobilizing women will further his mission of revolutionizing the nation. Henrietta, however, has radical ideas of her own and does not passively accept Sidney's abandonment nor his political ideology. A witty battle of the sexes ensues against a hilarious backdrop of romantic entanglements and playful attacks on many of Britain’s social and political institutions.

Jeffrey Hatcher’s plays, including Three Viewings and Compleat Female Stage Beauty, among many others, have been produced extensively in New York and at regional theatres throughout the country. Based in Minneapolis, Hatcher is a 1989 recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship. In addition, he has written numerous film and television scripts, as well as a book, The Art & Craft of Playwriting. Ruth Weiner is Professor and Coordinator of Studies in Theater Arts at Carleton College; M.A., Wisconsin. She teaches acting, directing and contemporary theater. She is also one of the faculty directors of the Players' productions.
