Herman Woock
Class of 1924: Basketball, Football and Baseball
Herman Woock was an outstanding three-sport athlete at Carleton. The basketball teams he played on won 58 games and lost only eight, and culminated in an undefeated season his senior year. The 1924 Algol notes that he was consistently among the team's high scorers and seldom failed to control the tip-offs from his center position.
Though a letterman on Carleton's fine football teams of the early 20s, his strongest suit was probably baseball. He was the mainstay of the pitching staff on teams which were undefeated in Midwest Conference play in his junior and senior years. He once pithed a full 16-inning game against Cornell and batted in the winning run.
Immediately following graduation, Woock moved to northern Minnesota and taught and coached at Crosby-Ironton High School for 21 years. While at C-I, he took seven basketball teams to the Minnesota State High School tournament, coached four consecutive undefeated football teams and state championship relay teams in track. He also coached a state championship American Legion baseball team. In 1926 he signed with and played professionally for Providence in the Eastern League.
Woock coached for three years at St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, before moving to Aitkin High School in 1948 as athletic director and basketball coach. He continued to pitch in Minnesota amateur baseball leagues and pitched in the Minnesota State Amateur Tournament at the age of 52.
Woock was elected into the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in 1970. In 1974, a memorial scholarship was established in his name at Brainerd Community College.
