John Arado
Class of 1966: Basketball, Baseball and Football
A native of River Forest, Illinois, Jack Arado came to Carleton with a "devil-may-care" exterior and almost immediately ignited fans in three sports. His quickness and sense of being in the right place at the right time were electrifying, and his 18-points-per-game average helped the basketball team to the 1966 Midwest Conference championship.
Arado's clutch hitting and an uncanny ability to effortlessly turn the double play were instrumental in leading to a 1964 MWC baseball title. He earned All-Conference honors in basketball and baseball and, though only 5' 8" and 160 pounds, he was Honorable Mention All-Conference in football before a knee injury ended his gridiron career. Athletic Director Jack Thurnblad, who coached him in basketball and assisted in football and baseball, called him "the greatest competitor I ever coached."
