Fall '06 newsletter

To: Alumni Letter Winners

Re: Alumni “C” Club Fall Newsletter

Writing to such a mixed group is awkward; some have been involved with this organization for 30 years, and others are recent grads who have no knowledge of it.

The Alumni ‘C’ Club was formed in 1976 to create a Hall of Fame, honoring outstanding athletes, coaches, and teams at Carleton. Since then, 104 athletes, 12 coaches, two teams (the undefeated/untied 1954 football team and the 1980 NCAA championship men’s cross country team) and one caretaker (perhaps the greatest contributor of them all) have been cited.

Criteria for induction have been left somewhat vague to allow for the recognition of excellent 2-3 sport athletes, outstanding one-sport athletes, and those who have achieved notably after graduation. A couple of trophy cases in the West Gym present plaques for all citations.

Nominations are solicited from alumni letter winners each fall and for several years have been focused on reunion classes (10 year, 20 year, 25 year, 30 year and 40 year, etc.) Current College employees and those who graduated less than ten years ago are not considered.

Decisions are made by the “C” Club Board, including:

  • Chuck Lunder ’37 (football, basketball and baseball)
  • Jack Thurnblad ’49 (basketball and baseball)
  • Jon Nicholson ’58 (basketball and baseball)
  • Donnie Dean ’68 (football)
  • John Ophaug ’72 (basketball and track)
  • Kim Gillen Corbey ’86 (swimming)
  • Kelly Tan O’Hara ’00 (track)
  • Dan Schofer ’00 (cross country and track)
  • Lizzy Erickson ’04 (volleyball and track)

The Board meets at Homecoming and screens nominations each January for the Hall of Fame Induction Luncheon held in June at Reunion.

Among other things, the agenda for the 2006 meeting includes 1) the addition of the 15 year, 35 year, 45 year, and 55 year classes to those considered for recognition; 2) the relative merits of being with the Alumni Office organization or separate; and 3) consideration of how this group fits with the Knights Athletic Club (another alumni athletic group that has focused on raising funds for certain projects, an informative webpage, and alumni networking).

If you are interested, please return the enclosed card with your nominations and to receive a sort-of-quality newsletter (that each year diminishes in importance as internet communications expands).

Carleton athletics came off a good year in 2005-06, with the women 4th of 12 conference teams in all-sports rankings, the men 6th of 11, and the entire program 54th (of over 400 NCAA Div. III) in all-sport rankings of NCAA national competition.

New head coaches in women’s soccer and football bring optimism and excitement to the 2006-07 season. The arrival of new students, equally full of optimism and high expectations, always makes early fall a particularly enjoyable season here.

We urge computer jocks to follow current Carleton sports through the Carleton Web pages at http://apps.carleton.edu/athletics/. Thanks, and please let us hear from you.

Sincerely,
Bill Huyck ’53
