Fall 2007 newsletter
Greetings C Club,
It’s that time of year again! Time to tell recent grads what The Alumni C Club does (and does not do) and to solicit nominations for the Hall of Fame from all former Carleton letter winners.
Since 1976, the Alumni C Club has annually recognized those who have made outstanding contributions to athletics at Carleton. Criteria have deliberately been a little vague, allowing the citation of brilliant one sport athletes, versatile two and three sport players, those who were good as undergrads and excelled later, coaches, top teams, and (perhaps most deserving of all) a rare, good man who for years took care of Laird Stadium, all the equipment and facilities in it, and the fields around it.
We don’t raise money, hire and fire, or try to solve the ills of the world. We just identify and recognize three or four notable contributors at a Reunion luncheon each June.
A Board manages this effort. Current members (subject to annual change) include:
- Chuck Lunder ’37
- Jack Thurnblad ’49
- Bill Huyck ’53
- Jon Nicholson ’58
- Donnie Dean ’68
- John Ophaug ’72
- Kim Gillen Corbey ’86
- Dave Hoppe ’89
- Kelly Tan O’Hara ’00
- Dan Schofer ’00
- Liz Erickson ’05
We encourage you to nominate anyone you think should be honored. Current College employees are not eligible, nor are those less than ten years out of college. We consider Reunion classes (1998, 1993, 1988, etc.) to focus the search and to get honorees here.
Last year we had nearly fifty nominations (including many eminently worthy ones) and had a truly tough time finally selecting four Hall-of-Famers.
Why a max of only three or four? A warm June noon, competing Reunion activities, and just plain humane considerations for those attending, demand tight limits! Also, we want this to be truly selective … a real honor.
Enclosed you will find a list of accumulated nominations for 2008. Please send us yours too and, if you wish, include their sports and specific accomplishments if you can remember.
Thanks and best wishes.
Sincerely,
Bill Huyck ’53
