Robert Letchinger died 5-Oct-2015 after a lengthy struggle with lymphoma. His survival since his diagnosis 16 years earlier was actually something of a medical miracle as he was twice saved by experimental therapies when all established treatments had failed.

After graduation from Carleton ( Distinction in Major/ Magna Cum Laude/Phi Beta Kappa), Rob earned a law degree from Northwestern University Law School and subsequently practiced law in Chicago, specializing in human resources and management law. He became a skilled management/labor contract negotiator and in that capacity was able to preserve several thousands of American jobs.

I remember Rob to have been a remarkable intellect, even by Carleton standards. To this day , I can quote from several of his Carleton papers. No other student had as profound an impact on my thinking as he had. What I remember most about Rob was his passion and his tendency to get so excited about any number of issues - historical questions, literature - not just to grasp and appreciate it, but to become positively passionate about it. I am privileged to have been his classmate, and grateful that our friendship continued and grew after Carleton.
