James Fulton Charles Koehler, age 65, of Richardson, Texas, died suddenly of cardiac arrest on May 12, 2016. Son of Fulton and Mary Jane Koehler, Jim was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the third of four children.

Jim graduated from Washburn High School in 1968 where he played football and hockey, and ran track. He graduated from Carleton College in 1973 with a degree in mathematics. Jim met Susan Baily (’72) in his freshman year at Carleton. They were married in 1973.

For 24 years, Jim worked for computer manufactures determining how mathematical algorithms underlying scientific computations could best be implemented in a machine’s architecture. He retired in 2006 from Hewlett Packard in Richardson, where he had moved in 1990.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Susan; his daughter Allison; his son Lucas and his wife Ann Marie and their children Fulton and Foster; sister Ruth Bergerson; brothers George and Tom Koehler and their families; and a host of relatives related by marriage.

Jim was a cheerful servant to his church and his community. At St. Barnabas, he was an elder and taught adult and children’s Sunday school. He was the Democratic precinct chairman in Cottonwood Creek and helped serve meals at The Bridge, a Dallas homeless shelter. Jim’s mind was unconstrained by convention. He was insatiably curious, full of joy, and whimsy. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. God granted Jim serenity, courage and wisdom.

Jim and I went to grade school together at University Elementary school in Minneapolis. He and I went to different high schools and I believe he transferred in after freshman year at Carleton. Jim was a math genius, and one of the nicest fellows you'd ever want to meet. I only had a limited number of conversations with him during reunions, but talked with him at length a number of times by telephone. A wonderful felllow.

After graduation Jim discovered we had common favorite people in Minneapolis. He always checked in with me at Christmas time after that. What an able and active, positive, generous person! His reaching out made a big difference to me. An excellent human being!
