Gary Schwarzman ’66 P92 W66

Gary M. Schwarzman of Alameda,California, a former Falmouth, resident, died on January 13, after living for two years with a brain tumor. He was 71.

He was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Beth Schwarzman, in 2012.

He was born in Vineland, New Jersey, and attended Carleton College in Minnesota, where he earned his bachelor’s degree and was active in theater. After college he moved to San Francisco and started a small software company, pioneering computer-aided dispatching and record-keeping systems for public agencies such as fire departments.

In 1977, he and his wife and their two young daughters sailed their boat from California through the Panama Canal to the East Coast, settling in Falmouth in 1981. They went on to complete many more sailing expeditions, traveling to destinations as far-flung as West Africa. Brazil, Newfoundland, Scandinavia, and Cuba. In his 1998 book, “The Architect’s Apprentice,” he tells the story of the building of their 43-foot cutter, Anasazi, which he and his wife sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. His love for adventure also took him by boat through the Grand Canyon a dozen times.

Mr. Schwarzman enjoyed introducing young people to boats and the sea. He volunteered with the Sea Scouts and started and ran a youth boatbuilding program in East Falmouth. He was instrumental in the creation of the Tall Ship Education Academy, a San Francisco Bay Area nonprofit organization for high school girls, and was a founding board member for Call of the Sea, which connects urban youth to San Francisco Bay and beyond. Working in this capacity for a decade, he led sailing expeditions in Baja California, headed up development, and spearheaded a renewed education program.
