International Film Forum: SLINGSHOT HIP HOP
2008 film from Palestine/US.
“Inspired by Tupac Shakur, young Tamer Nafar became the first Palestinian solo rapper, and in 2000 he teamed with his brother Suhell and pal Mahmoud Jrere to form the influential group DAM, whose songs promote nonviolent resistance to Israel. Jackie Shalloum's edgy video documentary shows how hip-hop—like cell phones and the Internet—connects Palestinians otherwise cut off from each other by checkpoints and bureaucracy, though female rappers face the added difficulty of overcoming gender taboos” (Andrea Gronvall, Chicago Reader). The film will be introduced by Yaron Klein.
