Buoyed by a raucous crowd that got into the Hawaiian Night theme, sophomore Tianen Chen scored a game-high 14 points and senior Shane McSparron added 13 as the Carleton College men’s basketball team kicked off the 2014-15 campaign with a 69-53 triumph over visiting Bethany Lutheran College.

Michele Arima scored a team-high 15 points and Skylar Tsutsui chipped in 14 points, but the Carleton College women’s basketball team dropped its home opener, 58-51, to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

The Carleton College football team finished the year on a high-note, posting a 13-6 victory over Hamline University on Saturday. The game was played in snowy conditions, putting an extra emphasis on defense and special teams. The Knights excelled in both areas, thanks in part to the efforts of senior defensive back Alex Polk and rookie punter Eric Williams. The duo picked up MIAC weekly honors as the conference’s Defensive and Special Teams Players-of-the-Week.

A day’s worth of nervous anticipation ended on Sunday when the Carleton College men’s cross country team was awarded one of 16 at-large bids to next weekend’s NCAA Championships. The Knights are headed to Nationals for the second straight year, the fifth time in the last 11 seasons, and the 22nd time overall.

The No. 25-ranked Carleton College men’s cross country continued its push towards a bid to Nationals as the Knights took fourth at the NCAA Central Region Championships on Saturday. Juniors Hart Hornor and Jonah Barry were joined on the All-Region squad by rookie Jerry Cook-Gallardo.
