Fresh off a spectacular 2009 season culminated by the Carleton baseball program’s first appearance in the MIAC Playoffs, the Knights will welcome a talented crop of first-year student-athletes to the fold when the fall term begins.

While christening the newly refurbished and renamed Mel Taube Field with a 9-3 home record, the Carleton Knights completed one of the finest seasons in school history. With 21 wins, the Knights posted the second-highest victory total in school history, and their third-place finish in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) put Carleton in the conference tournament for the first time. The spectacular season was highlighted by a number of notable individual and team performances.

Two Knights Named to All-Region Team

For the first time ever, Carleton College had two baseball players selected to the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-Midwest Region Baseball team. Outfielder Russell Fujisawa was named to second team All-Region and utility player Ethan Guevin made the third team. It marked the second year in a row Carleton was represented on the All-Midwest Region team.

Carleton’s senior Ethan Guevin was the lone pitcher selected to receive the ABCA/Rawlings® NCAA Division III Gold Glove Award as announced today by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). Guevin was recognized as the nation's best defensive player at his position.

Coming off the second-highest win total in school history, the Carleton College baseball team had four players earn all-conference honors. Seniors Ethan Guevin and Jay Melson repeated as All-MIAC selections. Joining them were junior Russ Fujisawa and first-year Alex Wirta. Head Coach Aaron Rushing received distinction as 2009 MIAC Coach of the Year for his role in guiding the Knights turnaroun on the diamond.

Knights' playoff run ends with loss to Hamline

The Knights storybook season concluded with a less than perfect ending as Carleton was eliminated from the MIAC Playoffs following an 8-1 loss to Hamline University. Russ Fujisawa went 2-for-3 and scored the lone run for the fourth-seeded Knights, who finished the year at 21-21 overall, the second-highest win total in school annals dating back to 1882.

Playoffs open with loss to St. Thomas

The Carleton baseball team (21-20), making its first-ever appearance in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) baseball playoffs, suffered a 15-3 setback to top-seed St. Thomas in the opening game of the double-elimination tournament. Pitching on only two days rest, staff ace Ethan Guevin turned in a gutsy outing, limiting the No. 7 team in the nation to only an unearned run over five innings before tiring in the sixth.

Guevin Receives Second Straight Academic All-District Award

Carleton College pitcher Ethan Guevin was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team. Guevin is 4-4 for the season with a 3.17 ERA, which ranked seventh-best in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). He’s totaled 36 strikeouts over 59.2 innings pitched, and in his final regular-season start, tossed a complete game at Concordia helping the Knights advance to the MIAC playoffs for the first time.

The Knights celebrated Cinco de Mayo in fine fashion, twice rallying in the late innings to sweep Concordia College-Moorhead, 5-4 and 7-6, and earn Carleton’s first-ever berth in the MIAC Playoffs. The Knights (21-19, 12-8 MIAC) entered the final day of the regular season knowing they needed two victories to reach the post-season, and they accomplished that goal in dramatic fashion. Despite being struck by a batted ball, pitching ace Ethan Guevin went the distance in the opener to keep Carleton alive, then in the nightcap, senior Cameron McDonald-Hyman capped a seventh-inning rally with a two-run game-winning double.

Knights Split with Minnesota-Morris; Playoff Hunt Resumes on Tuesday

The Knights split their final non-conference games of the regular season, outslugging the University of Minnesota-Morris, 10-7, in the opener before dropping a 4-2 decision in the second game. Senior Jay Melson went 3-for-3 in game one with a homer and four RBI. After Augsburg split with Concordia, the Knights know they must win both games versus the Cobbers on Tuesday to advance to the MIAC Playoffs for the first time.
