Guevin Shines in Summer League Play

Carleton ace Ethan Guevin carried his outstanding junior season into the summertime as he helped the Lehigh Valley Catz to one of the best seasons in their storied history. The Catz are members of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League (ACBL), a wood bat summer league comprised of some of the top players from colleges and universities across the country.

Head coach Aaron Rushing should be enthusiastic about the newest group of players added to the Carleton baseball program. The class of 2012 includes a number of players that finished their outstanding high school baseball careers in style, both in Minnesota and around the country.

Knights Earn Academic All-Conference

The MIAC has announced its list of academic all-conference honorees for winter and spring sports, with 21 Carleton student-athletes earning distinction. Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior, or senior with a minimum GPA of 3.5. Additionally, student-athletes in basketball, baseball, softball and tennis must compete in half of their team’s contests, while those in swimming & diving and track & field must qualify for the conference finals.

Baseball Field Named in Long-Time Coach Mel Taube's Honor

Carleton College will honor Mel Taube, who served the Knights’ athletic department from 1950-70 as a multi-sport coach and latter adding men’s athletics administration duties, by the naming of the Mel Taube Baseball Field. The dedication ceremony will be held during Carleton’s Alumni Reunion Weekend activities at 4:15 p.m. on Fri., June 20 at the baseball complex. Several members of the Carleton class of 1958 are on campus this weekend to celebrate their 50th reunion. This group has spearheaded a variety of planned improvements to Carleton’s baseball facilities, all in Coach Taube’s honor.

Melson Named to All-Region Team

Infielder Jay Melson was named to the 2008 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-Midwest Region Baseball Third Team. He paced the Knights in virtually every offensive category and ranked second in the conference with seven home runs. Melson hit .410 during conference action and batted a whopping .477 over the final month of the season.

Guevin to Play in Prestigious Summer Baseball League

Carleton College ace Ethan Guevin has been selected to play for the Lehigh Valley Catz in the prestigious Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League (ACBL), one of only nine summer leagues in existence across the country that is supported and sanctioned by Major League Baseball and the NCAA.

Knights Place Pair on All-MIAC Squad

Infielder Jay Melson and pitcher Ethan Guevin were named to the All-MIAC Baseball Team, marking the first time since 1995 that Carleton College placed two players on the all-conference squad. Senior Doug Sylvester was the Knights representative on the MIAC’s All-Sportsmanship Team.

Guevin Receives Academic All-District Award

Carleton College junior pitcher Ethan Guevin was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 5 second team. He went 3-5 with a 3.21 ERA, while ranking fifth in the conference with 47 strikeouts over 47.2 innings pitched. Guevin’s earned run average was fourth among MIAC hurlers with as many innings.

Knights Close Year with Blowout Victory

Russ Fujisawa homered twice and Jay Melson added a three-run blast as the Knights finished the 2008 season with a 25-5 win over the University of Minnesota-Morris. Eight players had multi-hit games for the Knights, including senior Doug Sylvester, who capped his collegiate career by reaching base four times. Game two of the doubleheader was rained out.

Knights Swept By Nationally Ranked Tommies

Russ Fujisawa had a double and 2 RBI in the opener and Jay Melson finished the day with three hits, but the Knights lost both ends of their final MIAC doubleheader this season, falling 6-2 and 14-3 to nationally ranked St. Thomas.

Knights Drop Pair of Extra-Inning Affairs on Senior Day

It was Senior Day at Knights Field and the final home MIAC doubleheader of the season, but Saint John’s University played the spoiler by winning a pair of extra-inning contests, 3-1 (9 inn.) and 4-3 (8 inn.) The lone senior on the Carleton team, Doug Sylvester, went 2-for-4 in the nightcap, including a two-run triple.

Oles Finish Sweep of Knights

Three days after originally scheduled, the Carleton College baseball team finally finished its doubleheader against crosstown foe St. Olaf College, with the Oles recording an 18-0 victory. Rookie David Ames had two hits to lead Carleton.
