Guzick, Carleton Have Strong Showing at Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional

The Carleton College men’s tennis team opened the 2009-10 season at the ITA Midwest Regional. Sophomore Ben Guzick advanced to the finals of the singles draw where he lost in three sets to the top seed. In doubles, Guzick and senior Winston Park moved into the quarterfinals before falling to the eventually champions.

Four Knights Receive All-MIAC Awards

Winston Park earned All-MIAC honors in singles for the third straight year and in doubles for the second time. Also receiving All-MIAC honors were an impressive group of first-year Knights. Ben Guzick and Dan Vollman earned All-MIAC in both singles and doubles, while Peter Dunn was honored for his singles play.

Slow Start Handcuffs Knights in MIAC Semifinals

The Knights saw the season draw to a close with a 5-4 loss to fourth-seeded St. Olaf in the semifinals of the MIAC Playoffs. Carleton, the second seed, won four of the six singles matches but was unable to overcome an ice-cold start in doubles play. First-year Ben Guzick capped his year with a straight-sets triumph at first singles.

Knights Hold Off Scots for Fifth Straight Win

The Knights close out their regular season with a five-match winning streak after pulling out a 5-4 triumph over visiting Macalester College. Carleton (14-9, 8-1 MIAC) trailed after the completion of the doubles portion of the match, but wins in four of the singles matches, including a three-set thriller by sophomore Austin Taylor that secured the victory.

Knights Clinch Second Seed With Fourth Straight Win

Wet weather forced Sunday’s match against Saint John’s University indoors, but the Knights enthusiasm was not dampened in an 8-1 triumph. The victory guaranteed Carleton will conclude the season second in the MIAC standings this season, the program’s seventh consecutive seventh consecutive top-2 conference finish. Play began with a doubles sweep by Carleton, including a 9-8 victory at first doubles by Winston Park and Dan Vollman.

The Knights posted their third consecutive victory shutting out Hamline University, 9-0. All five of Carleton’s rookies saw action on Friday afternoon. One member of that group, Sam Megowen, prevailed in doubles play, then won his singles match in straight sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-2.

Third-Set Victories Help Knights Hold Off Tommies

A trio of singles matches required to a third set, and the Knights prevailed in two of them as Carleton dispatched of the University of St. Thomas by a 7-2 score. Junior Winston Park rallied from a set down to win at fourth singles. He was also victorious at first doubles as the Knights improved to 5-1 in MIAC play.

The Knights secured a berth in the upcoming MIAC post-season tournament with an 8-1 victory at Concordia-Moorhead. Sophomore Austin Taylor was one of five players to prevail at both singles and doubles.

The Carleton men’s tennis team rallied from two points down to pull out a 5-4 win over crosstown foe St. Olaf College. Leading the charge were first-years Dan Vollman, Ben Guzick, and Peter Dunn. The trio won their singles matches to secure the one-point victory, Carleton's eighth straight over the Oles.

In a battle of the top two teams in the conference standings, Gustavus Adolphus maintained its MIAC supremacy with an 8-1 triumph. First-year Peter Dunn picked up Carleton’s only point, dispatching of the No. 12 player in the region, 6-4 and 6-4.

For the second straight day the Knights faced a regionally ranked squad from the Hawkeye State, and for the second consecutive day, Carleton absorbed a 5-4 defeat. This time the No. 10-ranked Knights fell to No. 13 Coe College.
