Lamb, Hansen, Taube, and Beson Award Winners Announced for 2012-13

In conjunction with Carleton’s annual Honors Convocation, the Physical Education, Athletics, and Recreation (P.E.A.R.) Department announced its annual senior awards. Sophie Pilhofer and Jessa Youso received the Pat Lamb Award. Megan Morrison and Sarah Nielsen are the recipients of the Ele Hansen Award. CJ Dale was honored with the Mel Taube Award, while Erik Klontz was given the Warren L. Beson Memorial Award.

Youso Selected All-Region Honorable Mention

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced that Carleton College middle hitter Jessa Youso received All-Region Honorable Mention. Knights Push No. 7 St. Thomas to the Brink, Can't Complete the Upset

The Carleton College volleyball team did what no other conference squad could do, take No. 7 ranked University of St. Thomas to a full five sets. The Knights overcame a one-set deficit and nearly completed the upset, falling 25-21, 17-25, 20-25, 26-24, 12-15 in the semifinals of the MIAC Playoffs. Senior Jessa Youso led all players with 20 kills and figured in six blocks. The Knights, listed eighth in the NCAA regional rankings released earlier on Thursday, are squarely on the bubble and must now cross their fingers until Monday morning to see if Carleton receives an at-large bid to the 64-team NCAA Tournament.

Nielsen, Youso Voted to All-MIAC Squad

Carleton College seniors Jessa Youso and Sarah Nielsen were both voted to the All-MIAC squad. The duo provided the Knights with a prolific 1-2 punch at the net as the pair ranked fourth and fifth respectively in kills per set during conference matches.

The Carleton College volleyball team advanced to the semifinal round of the MIAC playoffs with one of their most thrilling victories of the season. The Knights, who were swept by St. Olaf College three days ago in regular-season finale, made the shot cross-town trek and defeated their rivals, 3-2, in an intensely contested re-match. Senior Sarah Nielsen notched a team-high 21 kills for Carleton.

Youso named MIAC Volleyball Player-of-the-Week October 29th, 2012

With the Carleton volleyball team in need of a win to clinch a spot in the 2012 MIAC Volleyball Playoffs, senior Jessa Youso stepped up in a big way for the Knights last week. The middle hitter delivered a career performance to lead her squad to a come-from-behind, 3-2 victory over Saint Mary's last Wednesday, and finished the week with 34 kills and nine total blocks to help lead Carleton into the postseason. For her performance, Youso was named the MIAC Volleyball Hitter-of-the-Week.

More than pride was on the line when the Carleton College volleyball team hosted cross-town rival St. Olaf College in both teams’ regular season finale. Because of the way the season played out, today’s winner would host the loser in the quarterfinal round of the MIAC Playoffs. Despite 11 kills from senior Jessa Youso, the Knights suffered a tough 3-0 loss.

Senior Jessa Youso made sure she wouldn't end her career without a trip to the postseason, pounding out a career-best 23 kills to lead the Carleton College volleyball team (17-8, 6-4 MIAC) to a thrilling five-set win and punch the Knights' ticket for the MIAC Playoffs. Carleton dropped the first two sets before rallying back and forcing the match to go the distance. In the deciding fifth set, Youso tallied five kills including match point as the Knights prevailed 14-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-18 and 15-11.

Knights Drop Second Match in as Many Days

Despite Sarah Nielsen’s match-high 16 kills, the Carleton College volleyball team dropped its second straight home game, losing an important conference match to Concordia College by a 3-0 margin. The loss dropped the Knights into a tie for fifth place in the conference standings.

The Carleton College volleyball team returned home to West Gym for the first time in nearly two weeks, only to suffer an sweep at the hands of the College of Saint Benedict. The loss snapped the Knights’ five-match conference win streak lasting one month. But Carleton stays in a tie for third place in the conference. Seniors Jessa Youso and Sarah Nielsen led the Knights with nine kills apiece.

The Carleton College volleyball squad won its fifth straight conference match and stay tied for third in the MIAC standings following a 3-1 road win against Augsburg College. The Knights were led by Sarah Nielsen, Karen Halls, and Jessa Youso, who had 14, 13, and 11 kills, respectively. Carleton’s (16-6, 5-2 MIAC) five conference victories this year equal its combined total from the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
