Schmidt Wins Marathon Match to Take Fifth Place at ITA Small College Championship

Carleton College sophomore Kathryn Schmidt finished her weekend of action at the ITA National Small College Championships in dramatic fashion, prevailing 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (1-7), and 7-6 (7-1) in a nearly four hour-long match. Schmidt captured fifth place as she capped a tournament that saw her defeat the defending national singles champion on Friday.

First-year Kathryn Schmidt lost 6-0, 6-4 to Jackie Shtemberg from The College of New Jersey in the opening round of the 2009 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships. Schmidt finishes the year 15-3 in singles play.

Carleton first-year Kathryn Schmidt was among 32 single players selected by the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Committee selected to compete in the 2009 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships. Schmidt is the first Knight to reach the national tournament since Sara Russell ’06 at the end of the 2005 season.

The second-seeded Knights were upset by third-seed St. Olaf in the semifinals of the MIAC Tennis Playoffs by a 5-4 score. First-year Kathryn Schmidt won her singles match in straight sets, and she teamed with fellow rookies Erin Gudul for the victory at first doubles.

The Knights closed the regular season with a 9-0 victory over Macalester College. Among the winners on this day was first-year Linnea Carlson, who was victorious at second doubles then rallied to win the third-set tiebreaker in singles action.

Battaglini Selected to Coach at National Tournament

Carleton College Women’s Tennis Coach Luciano Battaglini was selected to coach the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Northern Section 18 and Under Boys Team. The team consists of the top six boys from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Northwest Wisconsin as selected by the USTA.
