Knights Break Two Track Records at Pre-National Meet

Competing at the site of the upcoming NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, the Carleton College women’s track and field team established a pair of track records at the Darren Young Classic. Clare Franco won the 400-meter dash in a record time of 58.96, and the Knights distance medley relay prevailed with a winning time of 12:28.18.

Last Friday, Carleton College women’s track & field hosted its annual "Meet of the Hearts" and that seemed to be a fitting title, with senior distance runner Alison Smyth (Billings, Mont./West) showing plenty of heart in a standout performance. Smyth finished first in the women's mile with a time that helped her leap towards the top of the MIAC performance list and into the Top 25 nationally as well. For her performance, Smyth has been named the MIAC Women's Indoor Track Athlete-of-the-Week.

Knights Win Seven Events During Friday Showcase

The Carleton College women’s track and field team hosted its lone indoor meet of 2012 on Friday night, welcoming competitors from the College of Saint Benedict and St. Olaf College. Alison Smyth prevailed in a spirited battle in the mile run, one of seven events that the Knights won.

The chips might have been stacked against them. The Carleton College women’s track and field team did not send its full squad to the meet, and those that were entered, competed against a field comprised mostly of Division I and Division II student-athletes. Despite those odds, the Knights turned in some solid performances during the MSU Open hosted by Minnesota State-Mankato.

Knights Open Year at St. Olaf Triangular

The Carleton College women’s track and field team opened the 2012 schedule at the St. Olaf Triangular. The Knights started the campaign with several strong performances, including Haley Johnson catching a St. Olaf runner down the homestretch to win the 600-meter dash for a half-second victory at 1:41.06.

Knights Seventh in GPA, Secure Another USTFCCCA All-Academic Award

The Carleton College women’s track and field team posted a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average, the seventh-best figure in the nation, and was one of 111 programs recognized as an All-Academic team by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). This was the second time in the last three years that the Carleton women ranked among the nation's top 10 teams academically.

Kelly Lovett Named USTFCCCA Scholar Athlete of the Year; Two Others Honored

Knights Earn Academic All-Conference

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its list of academic all-conference honorees for winter and spring sports, with 26 Carleton student-athletes earning distinction. Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior, or senior with a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Simone Childs Walker Named to Academic All-America First Team

Carleton College distance runner Simone Childs-Walker ’12 was honored Thursday as a first-team selection to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. A philosophy major with a 3.99 grade-point average, she is the 17th Carleton student-athlete recognized as an Academic All-American by CoSIDA and the third garner a spot on the national first team.

Kelly Lovett Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

Kelly Lovett ’11 recently graduated from Carleton College and had already added national champion to her résumé this spring. The three-time All-American picked up another honor as she was awarded a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. She is one of 58 scholarship winners nationwide to receive the $7,500 award, with 29 female and 29 male student-athletes from a spring sport each securing a grant for post-graduate studies. Lovett won the javelin at the 2011 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships and owned a 3.80 grade-point average as a political science major.
