Quartet Barely Miss National Bids

The Carleton College women’s track and field team had a strong spring season and four Knights just missed earning a bid to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. Ruth Steinke, Colette Celichowski, Amelia Campbell, and Kao Sutton all turned in All-Conference performances at this season’s MIAC Outdoor Championships, but they just missed qualifying for the national championships.

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Ruth Steinke (Fy./Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) trimmed eight seconds off her personal best and won the steeplechase, and Colette Celichowski (So./Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) broke the school record in the 1500-meter run at the UW-La Crosse Qualifier, a “last chance” meet held at the site of this year’s NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

In conjunction with Carleton’s annual Honors Convocation, the Physical Education, Athletics, and Recreation (P.E.A.R.) Department announced its annual senior awards. Sophie Pilhofer and Jessa Youso received the Pat Lamb Award. Megan Morrison and Sarah Nielsen are the recipients of the Ele Hansen Award. CJ Dale was honored with the Mel Taube Award, while Erik Klontz was given the Warren L. Beson Memorial Award.

Steinke’s Steeplechase Title Highlights Day Two at MIAC Championships

Ruth Steinke grabbed the spotlight for the Carleton College women’s track and field team as she won the steeplechase at the MIAC Outdoor Championships and established a new personal best time of 11:18.27. That was the Knights’ second event title of the weekend and one of seven All-Conference performances for Carleton, which finished seventh out of 11 teams participating.

4x800 Relay Breaks School Record on Day One of MIAC Outdoor Championships

The biggest day one highlight for the Carleton College women’s track and field team, was the Knights’ victory in the 4x800 relay. Sarah Trautman, Colette Celichowski, Ruth Steinke, and Haley Johnson broke the school record by more than three seconds.

Meet of the UnSaintly Serves as a Tune up for Conference Championships

In the final competition before next weekend’s conference championships, about two-thirds of the Carleton College women’s track and field team participated in the Meet of the UnSaintly, an unscored contest hosted by Hamline University. Carleton’s top showings came in the 800-meter run and the field events.

Amelia Campbell Earns All-Conference Distinction at MIAC Heptathlon

Amelia Campbell earned All-Conference distinction with her third-place showing at the MIAC Heptathlon. She was the only competitor in 14-person field to finish among the top four finishers in all seven events. Campbell’s overall finish was the best by a Knight since Kestrel Schwaiger ’07 won the heptathlon in 2006.

Haley Johnson Leads Knights at Macalester Invitational

Haley Johnson’s second-place result in the 1500-meter run was the top individual performance by the Carleton College women’s track and field team at the Macalester Invitational. Johnson crossed the line in 4:49.2, ranking behind only a Division I runner from the University of Minnesota.

Knights Win Three Events, Take Fourth at Carleton Relays

Thanks to the yeoman’s effort by the Carleton College facilities staff and grounds crew, the track at Laird Stadium was cleared of snow in order to allow the track and field teams to hold the Carleton Relays— the Knights’ only co-ed home meet of the 2013 outdoor season—as scheduled. The Carleton women finished in fourth place.

Knights Ranked Fifth in Central Region

In this week’s USTFCCCA NCAA Division III regional team rankings, the Carleton Women’s Outdoor Track and Field team moved into the No. 5 spot in the Central Region. The Knights recently captured a fourth-place finish at the Norse Relays at Luther College.
