Carleton College alum Katie Visco ’07 is attempting to become the youngest woman to run across America. Only about 170 people are on record as having completed the trek across the country and only ten have been women. UPDATE: Katie crossed the 1,000-mile mark in late June and reached her hometown of Glen Ellyn, Ill. Follow her Boston to San Diego trek via her Web site.

Knights Post Third-Best GPA in Nation; Four Individuals Earn All-Academic Award

The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association recognized the Carleton College’s women’s program as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team. The Knights posted the third-best cumulative grade point average (3.590) in Division III. Additionally, four members of the squad were named to the Division III Women’s All-Academic Track and Field Team.

Campbell Honored with Academic All-District Award

Carleton College senior Karen Campbell has been named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Women’s Track/Cross Country Academic All-District second team. She is the 10th Carleton student-athlete to receive the academic all-district honor this year.

Sophomore Kelly Lovett and first-year Simone Childs-Walker were the only members of the Carleton women’s track and field team to compete at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The pair combined for a trio of All-America performances, with Lovett placing seveth in the javelin and Childs-Walker running eighth in the 10K and third in the 5K.

Sophomore Kelly Lovett and first-year Simone Childs-Walker will compete at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 21-23 at Marietta College in Ohio. Lovett enters the javelin competition tied for fourth in the national rankings, while Childs-Walker qualified sixth in the 10,000-meter run and 18th for the 5,000-meter race.

Roach Wins Steeplechase at Last Chance Meet

Junior Laura Roach and first-year Claire Franco competed at the NCAA Qualifier, a last chance meet hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Both Knights improved their NCAA provisional times but narrowly missed qualifying for the national meet.

Knights finish fifth at MIAC Championships; Childs-Walker wins 5K and 10K

The women’s team got contributions from nearly everyone on the team as the Knights placed fifth in the team competition at the 2009 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships. First-year Simone Childs Walker dominated the field as she recorded NCAA provisional qualifying times in winning both the 5,000 and 10,000-meter races on her home track.

Childs-Walker Named MIAC Track Athlete of the Week

Carleton College first-year Simone Childs-Walker was selected as the MIAC Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for April 27-May 3. She ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 17:17.06 through heavy rain at the Tommie Twilight Meet.

Childs-Walker Cruises in 5000 Meter Victory

Simone Childs-Walker won the 5000 meter race at the Tommie Twilight with a time of 17:17.06. Her victory was by over a minute over fellow Carleton runner Karen Campbell. Childs-Walker's time is the fastest-time in the MIAC this season and an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time, despite having to run in a downpour throughout the entire race.
