ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College women's tennis team continued its outstanding postseason streak, winning twice last week to capture its third-straight MIAC Playoff championship. In both victories— a 5-2 win over St. Catherine and a 5-3 victory over Gustavus—the Knights got standout performances from Joyce Yu (Taipei, Taiwan/Taipei American School). The Carleton sophomore won both her doubles matches and had a key singles win in the championship match, and she was up a set in her other singles match when her team secured its fifth point. For her role in the Knights' title, Yu was named the MIAC Women's Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week.
Yu and teammate Anne Lombardi started the Playoffs in style with a hard-fought 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles against a talented tandem from St. Catherine. She also held a 6-4, 2-3, lead at No. 5 singles when her team recorded its fifth point and the match reached decision. Yu and Lombardi got Carleton its only doubles win in Saturday's final against Gustavus, winning their match at No. 1 8-2. She then dominated her No. 5 singles match, 6-0, 6-0, to even the overall score 2-2 and give her team an early shot of momentum in singles play en route to the title. This season, Yu is 15-4 in singles play, and she's 12-6 in doubles matches. Her and Lombardi are the region's ninth-ranked tandem.
Thanks to the two wins, Carleton improved to 18-2 overall this season, and with a perfect 10-0 regular-season record and a 2-0 Playoff mark, it went 12-0 against MIAC foes in the regular season and postseason, combined. Up next, Yu and her teammates will head to Chicago for a four-team regional to open NCAA Tournament play this week. The Knights will take on Westminster (18-1) in the first round, and the winner will advance to Saturday's second round, where it will meet the winner of the Principia-Chicago match for a trip to the Sweet 16.
