NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Carleton College varsity athletics unveiled a new set of marks on Thursday, including a new primary logo, wordmark, and secondary logos.
The goal of the project was to provide the College’s 20 varsity athletic teams with a modern, dynamic logo that provided better flexibility for use in a variety of media, including game uniforms, practice apparel, print material, and multimedia applications.
With the use of the knight head—either by itself or in conjunction with the wordmark and/or “C” crest and shield—the Carleton athletic teams now have greater flexibility in the use of the logo to meet their specific needs, while still providing a consistent look and feel across the College’s 20 varsity programs.
The new marks balance the storied tradition of athletics at Carleton with giving the varsity athletic teams a more contemporary look.
Carleton’s Physical Education, Athletics, and Recreation (PEAR) Department will utilize a soft roll-out of the logo, meaning that the updated version of the marks will be used when varsity teams order new uniforms, practice gear, etc.
Clothing with the new logo won’t be available in the Carleton Bookstore until later. Until then, fans can win a t-shirt featuring the new look. On Sept. 15, followers of @CarletonKnights on Instagram will be entered in a drawing, so start following the Knights today!
The new logo will also be showcased on all game programs and other gameday materials beginning with the start of the 2014-15 competition calendar. These logos will also be used immediately on the varsity athletic website.
The logo re-design process began in 2012. Current student-athletes, coaches, and select alumni were asked for feedback multiple times during the project.
“We are excited that our current student-athletes are so supportive of the new, modern look,” said Eric Sieger, Carleton College director of media and public relations.
“The fact that both male and female student-athletes gave us their approval at such similar rates affirms that we were on the right track with these logos,” added sports information director David Pape
Mongoose Graphics developed the new Carleton Knights logos, wordmark, and sport-specific marks. The first round of logos designs were evaluated in spring 2013, with student-athletes, coaches, College personnel, and others providing over 20 pages of comments during feedback sessions.
Using that information, Mongoose Graphics worked with the College on adjusting the design and provided a new batch of marks in spring 2014. These images went through a similar vetting process, and after a few more tweaks the end result was the final version of this new look for the Carleton Knights.
The new logos were unveiled first via the Carleton varsity athletics’ Instagram account (@Carleton Knights) with later distribution via the website and the Knights’ other social media channels.
