For the fourth year in a row, Kathryn Schmidt (Sr./Hopkins, Minn.) has earned a bid to the NCAA Division III Individual Championships. Already a three-time All-American, she is one of 32 singles players selected to participate in the tournament from May 24-26 in Cary, N.C.
Schmidt enters the NCAA tournament riding an 11-game win streak and has only played three sets in two of those matches. In conference play in 2012, Schmidt went 10-0 at No. 1 singles and had only one blemish on her doubles record in nine matches (8-1). She is currently the third ranked singles player in the region.
Historically, Schmidt has faced tough competition in the NCAA tournament. Last year she fell to eventual national champion Kristin Lim in straight sets (6-4, 6-2). Schmidt gave Lim one of her closest matches as she was one of two players who was able to win more than five games from Lim. In her first two years, a semifinalist and a quarterfinalist bounced Schmidt from the tournament.
