NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Skylar Tsutsui (So./Northridge, Calif./Harvard Westlake) had a season-best 14 points, but Carleton College women’s basketball team could not maintain a second half lead and lost, 58-47, to visiting Gustavus Adolphus College. Akemi Arzouman (Sr./Irvine, Calif./University) moved into 10th place on the Knights’ all-time scoring list with her 11-point effort (SEE CHART AT BOTTOM).
The game was close throughout the first half as neither squad led by more than five points. Gustavus (6-2, 5-0 MIAC) carried a slim 28-25 advantage into intermission.
The second half seemed destined for more of the same. Carleton (2-4, 2-2 MIAC) re-gained the lead at 31-30 on Jenny Ramey’s (Jr./Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) triple from the right corner at the 16:47 mark. However, Gustavus answered right back with a three-pointer from Abby Rothenbuehler on the Gusties’ next possession.
The Knights went on a 9-2 spurt over the next six minutes, a run capped by back-to-back layups by Emma Purfeerst (Jr./River Falls, Wis./River Falls), giving the hosts a 40-35 lead with 10:20 still to play.
Gustavus responded with a 12-0 burst over the next 7:15 and closed the game on a 23-7 run to remain undefeated in MIAC play.
“I'm very proud of our defensive effort tonight,” said Carleton head coach Cassie Kosiba. “We unfortunately went dry for a couple minutes toward the end today while Gustavus was able to knock downs open shots.”
Purfeerst contributed nine points, seven rebounds, and three steals for Carleton. Ramey chipped in nine points and four assists
Rothenbuehler notched her second straight double-double—15 points, 10 rebounds—to pace Gustavus, which also got 13 points from Julia Dysthe and 10 from Kelsey Florian.
The Knights travel to Concordia-Moorhead for a women’s men’s doubleheader on Tuesday, Dec. 11. The early game tips off at 5:45 and both contests can be heard on KDHL 920 AM in the Northfield/Faribault area and worldwide on Knights Online.
