Two Knights Named to All-Region Team

May 28, 2009 at 1:50 pm

For the first time ever, Carleton College had two baseball players selected to the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-Midwest Region Baseball team. Outfielder Russell Fujisawa (Jr./Riverwoods, Ill./Deerfield) was named to second team All-Region and utility player Ethan Guevin (Sr./Davis, Calif.) made the third team.

It marked the second year in a row Carleton was represented on the All-Midwest Region team. Last year, Jay Melson (Sr./Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) was named to the third team.

Fujisawa was the Knights spark plug at the top of the order. He led the team with a .413 batting average. His average was the fifth best in the MIAC and the fifth best single season average in Carleton history. Fujisawa also had 21 doubles for the year. He had five more doubles than any other player in the MIAC and easily broke Carleton’s previous single season record of 14 doubles.

Guevin split most of his time between three positions: pitcher, second base and designated hitter. For all four years Guevin has been at Carleton, he has been the Knights top starting pitcher. This year was no different as he posted an ERA of 3.18 with 37 strikeouts in 65 innings of work. The difference between this year and his other years was at the plate and in the field. Guevin improved his batting average to .363 and only committed two errors in the field. His fielding prowess earned him a ABCA/Rawlings® NCAA Division III Gold Glove Award.

The MIAC was extremely well represented on the All-Midwest team. Out of the 50 student-athletes selected, 20 were from the MIAC. St. Olaf led all MIAC schools with 5 players named to the team.
