Northfield, Minn. - Seniors Nate Flaherty (Oakdale, Minn./ Tartan), Ashley Ross (Waltham, Vt./ Vergennes), Tanner Schieck (Austin, Minn.), and Gunnar Stapp (Gordon, Wis./ Northwood) played the final home games of their collegiate career in a doubleheader against Bethel College, falling 19-3 and 9-2.
Flaherty and Luke Muellerleile (White Bear Lake, Minn./ Mahtomedi) both went 2-for-4 and Flaherty added a stolen base to spark the Knights’ offense.
An 11-run second inning for the Royals effectively ended the opener as the visitors put on an impressive offensive display, collecting 23 hits.
In game two the Knights again fell behind early, trailing 8-0 going into the bottom of the fourth. Carleton scored two runs in the bottom half, but could not muster a rally despite Schieck’s lights-out performance in the final two innings.
The senior righty allowed but one hit and no runs while striking out four. In his first year playing collegiate baseball, Schieck leads the Knights in strikeouts with 36 in just 28.2 innings.
Carleton hit much better in the second game, smacking five doubles and collecting nine hits. Eric Greenlee (Missouri City, Texas/ Episcopal) was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Ben Cooprider (DeKalb, Ill.) went 2-for-4 with a double.
The Knights will close out their season May 8 at 1 p.m. at Gustavus Adolphus College.
