TUCSON, Ariz. – The eighth inning proved to be decisive once again for the Carleton College baseball team, but this time it propelled the Knights (6-6) to an 11-10 victory over Oberlin College. David Stillerman (Jr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston) led the team with three big hits, driving in one and scoring another. MIAC Player-of-the-Week Hayden Tsutsui (Fy./Northridge, Calif./Chattsworth) recorded his ninth multi-hit game of the season, while notching two more RBI.
After both teams scratched across a run in the first inning, the Knights’ offense got rolling with three more in the second. Hikaru Mizuno (Fy./Tigard, Ore./Tigard) hit a RBI double to drive in the first run of the frame. After a ground out plated the second Knight of the inning, Stillerman came through with a two-out single to conclude the scoring run.
After a number of back-and-forth innings, the Yeomen (6-4) took a 10-7 lead into the bottom of the eighth, but the Knights wouldn’t go down easily. Stillerman once again made an impact by launching a ground rule double over the right field fence to start off the inning. Tsutsui then singled, and Ray Yong (Jr./Elmhurst, Ill./ York) laid down a perfect bunt to load the bases. After Nolan Baker (So./Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) hit a sacrifice fly to score Stillerman, Kevin Johnson (Jr./St. Anthony, Minn./DeLaSalle) hit a double to left field to plate Tsutui and put runners on second and third. Yong and Johnson would eventually score on another sacrifice fly and an Oberlin throwing error, respectively, to give the Knights an 11-10 advantage.
The birthday boy, Ted Harmon (Sr./Edina, Minn./Edina), came into the game and shut the door on the Yeomen. Over 2.1 innings of work, Harmon overcame some defensive struggles to allow only one unearned run.
Carleton returns to action tomorrow morning, March 27, against the Luther Norse. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 AM MST (12:00 PM CDT) at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz.
