Knights triumph over Pipers as Fisher breaks 1,000-yard mark for season

St. Paul, Minn.-- Erik Fisher (Sr./Maple Lake, Minn.) ran for 192 yards and a touchdown, becoming only the fourth back in Carleton history to surpass 1,000 yards in a single season as Carleton defeated Hamline, 31-7. Ben Cooprider (So./DeKalb, Ill.) caught four balls for 84 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown reception from Darren Caspers (Fy./Bemidji, Minn.) in the third quarter, and the Carleton defense limited Hamline to 192 total yards and recorded four sacks.

The Knights raced to an early 17-0 lead, scoring on three of their first four drives behind the strong running of Fisher, who passed the 100-yard mark for the game in the first quarter. The 192 yards pushed his season total to 1,035 yards, fourth on the Carleton single season list. Only Adam Henry '93 (1,244 yards in 1992), Skye Flanagan '98 (1,066 yards in 1997), and Dan Nienhuis '87 (1,044 yards in 1986) have eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in a single season at Carleton. The 192 yards set a new career-high for Fisher, giving him three of the nine-best single-game totals in Carleton history.

The Knights took control of the game early, scoring touchdowns on their first two possessions and adding a Pat Barry (Jr./Hercules, Calif./St. Mary's) 38-yard field goal late in the half.

On Carleton's first drive, Fisher rushed nine times for 44 of the drive's 58 yards, picking up first downs on two fourth-and-short situations. He bowled in from five yards out to give the Knights a 7-0 lead. After the defense forced a Hamline punt, Fisher broke off a 50-yard burst, setting up Caspers' 7-yard touchdown scamper. The Knights tacked on Barry's field goal, set up by a Cooprider 23-yard end-around run and took a 17-0 lead into the lockerroom.

The Knights would score the first time they touched the ball in the second half. On the seventh play of the drive, Caspers faked a pitch, stepped back and hit a streaking Cooprider perfectly in stride for a 60-yard score, as Cooprider outraced two Piper defenders into the endzone. It marked Carleton's longest pass play of the season.

The Knights would put the game out of reach shortly thereafter. Sophomore cornerback Nick Brokke (Roseville, Minn.) picked off his fifth pass of the season, returning it 31 yards to the Hamline 33-yard line. The Knights marched down to the 4-yard line, but a Fisher 3-yard run, a Caspers sneak and Fisher off-tackle play netted left the Knights with fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line. Caspers faked the dive play to Fisher and handed off to Cooprider on the naked reverse for the converted quarterback's second touchdown of the evening.

"We tried to make practice up-tempo this week and come into the game loose," Fisher said afterwards. As for breaking the 1,000-yard mark, Fisher was all smiles. "I couldn't be happier," he said. "My offensive line's done a great job all season and it was definitely one of my goals heading into the season. I just feel like we've gotten better each week as a team and hopefully we've turned the corner and we've got this program going in the right direction."

The Knights rushed for a season-high 241 yards, marking the third time in eight games this season they've surpassed the 200-yard mark. The defense held the Pipers to under 200 yards of total offense and had a shutout going until the Pipers scored with 5:16 remaining. Andrew Wild (Sr./Janesville, Wis./Craig) paced the team with 13 tackles, including a sack, as he moved within three tackles of seventh on Carleton's all-time list. He needs 23 tackles over the final two games to reach 300 for his career.

Rich Juehlich (So./Stillwater, Minn.), filling in for the injured Dan Karlgaard (Jr./Brainerd, Minn.), tallied a career-high 11 tackles with two passes defensed. Randy Foss (Fy./Hastings, Minn.) added 10 tackles and Luke Muellerleile (So./White Bear Lake, Minn./Mahtomedi), Doug Lind (So./Braham, Minn.) and Tim Blaha (So./Northfield, Minn.) added one sack each. Rookie linebacker Mike Gravelle (Austin, Minn.) chipped in with eight tackles and notched his first career interception.

"This team has gotten better through preseason camp and during the entire season," Carleton head coach Chris Brann said. "Once we got rid of the penalties and mistakes, we showed we're a pretty solid football team. The guys kept playing all season, no matter the circumstances, and kept the faith. We're just blessed these guys stuck with it and kept working hard the enitre season."

The Knights return to action next week at Macalester College on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. The game can be heard live on KYMN 1080 AM or here on Knights Online.
