Caspers hits career best, Barry nails two field goals but Knights fall to Royals

Northfield, Minn. – Sophomore quarterback’s Darren Caspers (Bemidji, Minn.) completed a career-best 19 passes for for 211 yards and senior kicker Pat Barry (Hercules, Calif./St. Mary's) booted field goals of 19 and 36 yards, but visiting Bethel University ground out a 21-6 win over Carleton College.

Caspers hit six different receivers in notching his second game of the season of more than 200 yards passing. Barry's two field goals moved him alone into third on Carleton’s all-time field goal list with 14.

Mike Kootsikas (So./Rosemount, Minn.) led the Knights’ receivers with seven catches for 84 yards and tight end Alex Marston (Jr./Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) added 59 yards on four receptions. Rookie running back R.J. Jackson (Roseville, Minn./De La Salle) carried 14 times for 49 yards. Safety Luke Muellerleile (Jr./White Bear Lake, Minn./Mahtomedi) tallied a career-high 17 tackles and sophomore linebacker Randy Foss (Hastings, Minn.) added 16 stops for Carleton.

Carleton drew first blood, embarking on a 12-play, 71-yard drive. It stalled out at the 4-yard line, and Barry booted his first field goal to stake the hosts to a 3-0 lead.

Bethel tallied 147 rushing yards in the second quarter, scoring all of its points in a nine-minute span and held the ball for nearly 11 minutes in the period. Barry kicked a season-long 36-yard field goal on the final play of the half, as the Knights marched 58 yards in 1:29 after Bethel’s third touchdown.

Neither team mounted a serious scoring threat in the second half, although the Knights pushed to the Bethel 17-yard line in the final two minutes, but were unable to punch it in for the score.

Carleton ends its home schedule next week, hosting Gustavus Adolphus College, while the Royals host Augsburg College. Both games kick off at 1 p.m.
