Tough to Swallow: Missed Chances Send Knights to Gustie Defeat

Box Score

Northfield, Minn. – Matt Frank (So./Caledonia, Minn.) had eight catches for 93 yards, setting a new Carleton College single-season receptions record in the process, and Darren Caspers (Sr./Bemidji, Minn.) threw for 201 yards but Carleton scored only once on five forays into Gustie territory in falling to Gustavus Adolphus, 14-10.

Jordan Stolp threw two touchdown passes and Adam Miron had eight tackles and returned an interception 74 yards late in the second quarter to set up the eventual game-winning score as the visiting Gusties (6-4, 4-4 MIAC) beat the Knights for the 10th straight time despite Carleton out-gaining the Gusties 269-164 and driving into Gustavus territory five times on seven second-half possessions.

Frank ended the year with a Carleton school-record 74 catches. His 1,120 yards receiving is the second-most in Carleton school history. Caspers finished 20-of-38 for 201 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. The yardage pushed his season total to 2,305 yards, also a Carleton single-season record, as are his 183 completions. Mike Kootsikas (Sr./Rosemount, Minn.) added five catches for 54 yards, pushing him past 100 career receptions, as he is only the sixth Carleton player to surpass the mark.

Stolp finished 15-of-34 for 139 yards with one interception to go with his two touchdowns. Chad Arlt led the Gusties with five catches for 48 yards and Kerry Zajicek added three catches for 62 yards.

The Knights defense held the Gusties to nine first downs and had four takeaways, but their Gustie counterparts notched four interceptions and a fumble recovery and held the Knights to 5-of-18 on third-down conversions.

The first half ended on a bizarre sequence of plays. Carleton’s Mike Morrissey (Jr./Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) forced a Stolp fumble, recovering it at the Gustavus 24-yard line with 1:30 left. Instead of Carleton scoring right before the half, though, Miron intercepted Caspers and returned it 74 yards to the Carleton 11-yard line with 34 seconds left. After a swing pass to Adam Lukes netted eight yards with nine seconds left, an incompletion with five seconds remaining made in third down from the 3-yard line. Stolp hit Patrick Wieneke with one second to go in the half and the visitors led, 14-7, at the break.

The Knights dominated the second half, as Gustavus never really threatened to score and the Knights seemingly had chance after chance. Late in the third the Knights drove inside the Gustie 10, but settled for a Tim Kane (So./Hopkins, Minn.) 26-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 14-10.

Blake Henke (So./Princeton, Minn.) intercepted Stolp on the next drive, but the Knights’ offense was unable to move the ball. Midway through the fourth, the Knights drove to the Gusties’ 36-yard line, but back-up quarterback John Hollowed (Jr./Mercer Island, Wash.) threw an interception on a trick play.

On Carleton’s final drive, Caspers moved the Knights 41 yards in five plays with less than two minutes left, leaving the Knights facing a third-and-five from the Gustie 35. Caspers tried to hit Steve Ramey (So./Cottage Grove, Minn./Park), but Ramey was buried by two Gustavus defenders before the ball arrived, but no pass interference was called. On fourth down, Caspers tried to find Frank, but again a Gustavus defender broke up the pass, although Carleton felt there should have been a pass interference call.

The Knights opened the scoring early, as the Knights recovered a fumble on the Gusties’ second play from scrimmage and promptly drove 42 yards in 10 plays, culminating in Caspers’ 5-yard toss to Frank. The Gusties tied it at 7-7 early in the second when Stolp hit Zajicek from 23 yards out. The drive was set up by a botched trick play by the Knights, as Caspers tried to hit one of his offensive linemen with a lateral that was recovered by the Gusties.

Despite the loss, Carleton finished with four wins for the second straight season. The 13 wins posted over the past four years is the most since a four-year span from 1993-96. The Knights easily could have posted a better record, as five of their six losses came by a combined 28 points. They were also the only team to beat Bethel, as the Knights posted a 17-14 victory over the Royals on Sept. 24. Bethel earned a share of the MIAC title by beating St. John's today and finished at 9-1.

It marked the final game for fifteen Carleton seniors, who finished their careers with 13 victories, the most since the class of 1997 scored 17 wins over four seasons and matching the class of 1998's 13 overall victories.
